Would you take this risk?

Hi Everyone,

We have to take a Delta flight to our next Cruise embarkation port. Delta said that they will charge for a bag that's over 62" (when measuring length + width + height).

Our suitcase that we want to take is 63". Would you take this suitcase? Has anyone ever had someone break out a tape measurer at airports?

I welcome your inputs.

I don't know about size, but if it's overweight, they'll charge you for it. I've seen that happen.

We have taken a bag similar to the one that your are describing. We didn't have any problems, however, we always use the Delta cubside check-in and have a nice tip VERY visible for the sky cap to see. It's cheaper than paying the fee for oversized luggage.

We have gotten busted on the over weight bags. Curbside check in is best. We have never had them dispute the size just the weight.

Yep, I agree w/ other posters and go with curbside check-in. Easier and you won't have to lug it inside. Worth it, I think.

I flew Delta in Jan and you definitely need to watch the weight. They did not seemed concerned about the size.

Ditto the above except that size does matter sometimes and I know I would not take the chance if it was me. Chances are you'll be fine but as airlines seek new revenue streams this could be tightened up any day.

The reason I say that is that we always check at curbside and tip well. In the past that has encouraged skycaps to look the other way, not so on our cruise last month. In spite of a $20 tip for 4 bags they made me shuffle weight from one to another.

Lesson: be a few pounds under and bring an expandable duffle for the trip home to account for the additional weight of the junk we picked up along the way.

I think it's just a matter of time till we read stories here about size charges.

we recently flew delta, and neither airport that we flew out of had curbside check-in for delta--other airlines did but delta wasn't offering it at this time

We got nailed by NWA from Detroit to Denver. We ended up buying a very inexpensive bag for our return trip....it was cheaper than paying the penalty! No more heavy bags for us.

Why take the chance???Buy 2 smaller bags.

I usually fly Southwest and they do the 70lb limit.I am flying Delta for the 1st time in Feb.. I am picking up a smaller piece of luggage and shifting weight around.

I am not sure I would want to lug a bag that big anyway. I agree, make it too smaller ones. Easier to handle and no risk.

Wouldn't the purchase of two new smaller bags be more expensive than just paying the fee for one overweight bag?

I don't know of anywhere to get a decent sized and quality piece of luggage for $25 (assuming the fee is about $50 and you buy two pieces of smaller luggage).

I have the same problem my bag is 63". I stressed over it so I just bought smaller bags. If you plan on flying again it will justify the cost. The piece of mind was worth it.
