BeeSkip Posted June 19, 2019 #1 Share Posted June 19, 2019 Hello... Has anyone done this excursion? I am trying to figure out why it is 99.00 pp to have a guide hike up the trail with you. We are hikers but don't want too strenuous.. What is the elevation change.? If you have any suggestions for Juneau other than a helicopter or floatplane...please give me your thoughts. Thanks Bee
tetleytea Posted June 19, 2019 #2 Share Posted June 19, 2019 You could hike up Mount Roberts for free, that is plenty challenging, and you get to see Mount Roberts where everybody else is paying $35. Purchase $10 at the shop or at the grill, and you can take the gondola ride down for free.
Rare karatemom2 Posted June 20, 2019 #3 Share Posted June 20, 2019 (edited) Looks like they lead you on a hike at Mendenhall Glacier. You do not need a guide for this - just go and pick up a trail guide at the Visitor's Center and you can do it easily on your own. Nugget Falls trail is one of the most common and easy trails there and is well traversed by many hikers - you will not be all alone! In Juneau, another popular option is whale watching. We usually rent a car and go off on our own adventure - Shrine of St. Therese, Eagle Beach, Treadwell Mine trail on Douglas Island, Last Chance Mining Museum and Perseverance Trail (this does have some elevation). If you are comfortable planning your own visit and do some research there is plenty of options beyond hiring a guide or taking an expensive excursion. tetleytea Posted June 20, 2019 #4 Share Posted June 20, 2019 FYI, Perseverance Trail = Mount Roberts About an hour, strenuous. Eagle sightings likely.

Just a slight correction - Perseverance Trail and Mount Roberts Trail are actually two different hikes. One takes you to the top of Mount Roberts - the other (Perseverance) begins by the Last Chance Mining Museum and travels through some of the old gold mining area and to a couple of impressive waterfalls. Here is a link that talks about the different hikes in Juneau. https://www.traveljuneau.com/things-to-do/hiking-trails/
