Tours in gibraltar

Is it best to take a ship tour of the rock as the lineups at cable car are long? We are going in November and

want to see the seige tunnels, it says you have to pre book?

The cablecar probably isn't the way to go if you want to see the Great Siege Tunnel & Galleries .

The bottom station is about a 30 minute walk from the cruise terminal, & the top station is about halfway along the ridge whereas the Gt Siege Tunnel is about a mile away at the extreme northern end of he ridge, overlooking the airport & Spanish border.

If the weather's fine and you are keen walkers, I suggest you set off early to be at the bottom station by about 9.30, ahead of the coachloads that come over daily from the Spanish resorts & you're unlikely to find a long line.

I suggest you buy just a one-way ticket.

Be aware that the cablecar service is suspended (deliberate pun :classic_rolleyes:) in windy weather

If you want to check out the apes, you can

- stop off at the intermediate station for that apes' den

- or go straight to the top then take the top station access road down a few hundred yards to the junction & turn left (south) to a second apes' den  (shown on googlemaps as "monkey feeding station")

Then walk north, past the top station, to the Great Siege Tunnel.

Googlemaps doesn't name the Gt Siege Tunnel, and it refuses to walk the road to it. Best I can do is

https://goo.gl/maps/bpfoX7MFUenPhCN67

but Gt Siege Tunnel is at the end of the un-named road immediately south of Farringdon's Battery. If you zoom in you'll see the parking lot.

Your cablecar ticket includes access to the Upper Rock conservation area, but there's a small admission fee for the Gt Siege Tunnel.

Then, rather than hike back to the cablecar, walk down the zig-zag road past the entrance to the World War 2 tunnels entrance (a tour there takes about an hour) and the Moorish Castle (small entrance fee, only worth ten - 15 mins), and down to Casemates Square & Main Street.

Casemates Square back to the ship is a 20 / 25 min walk.

Or if the weather's poor or you're as lazy as JB,  take an Upper Rock van tour from the cruise terminal (no need to pre-book, but don't be amongst the last off the ship). You'll be sharing with fellow-cruisers, taxi marshal takes care of that. Takes about 100 minutes & costs something like €25 or £22  (as elsewhere in Gib., both currencies accepted).

Includes a southern viewpoint photostop, admission to St Michael's Cave, a stop at the upper apes' den, and admission to Gt Siege Tunnel/Galleries.

Then down that zig-zag road past WW2 tunnels entrance & Moorish Castle.

Most folk elect to bale-out at Casemates Square to explore the town, or the driver will drop you back to the ship.

Includes about 20 mins at the Gt Siege Tunnel - that's long enough for most folk, but if you want to linger longer you can pay-off the driver at the tunnels & make your own way down to town (about 30 mins, all down-hill).

Or, as we did one time, we got the driver to drop us at the WW2 runnels (tours set off about every 20 minutes) & we walked down to the town from there.

agree with John Bull

avoid ships tour as their large coaches mean they are inaccessible the last part of the tip where Apes are and its a long uphill walk!

getting off ship ASAP and joining other cruisers to fill one of waiting taxis which will take you on tour including the main sites

key is to get up to top before the tour buses so that means leaving before 8.30am
