Vision imapired diabetic-Carnival Legend

We will be traveling on June 21 on the Carnival Legend with family. Mom is 78 years old, legally blind and an insullin dependant diabetic. What is the best advice for keeping insullin? Do the rooms have refrigerators or can we request one? We want her to have the time of her life and the more prepared we are, the more likely this will happen. Thanks for any helpful advice you can give me!

Although I'm not diabetic, there is a RN who posts regularly here who says that insulin does not have to be kept refrigerated, just not subjected to temperature extremes (like 105 degrees outside). So in your cabin, you shouldn't really need a refrigerator.

There are lots of cool pack type insulin carriers on the market that should do the trick if you need to take the insulin with you while going ashore. I know there are diabetics who post here, so perhaps they can recommend a product they like.

Most insulin does not require refrigeration. We do not refrigerate it at the hospital where I work. It does need to be kept from high heats though. If she will need to take her insulin ashore during the day, then I would recommend investing in an insulin travel pack that includes "blue ice". You will need to ask your room steward to help you freeze it the night before (the freezer in your room frig is not very good for this).

Otherwise, just keep the insulin in her cabin and keep the temperature in the room under 80 degrees. No need to refrigerate it.
