passport question

This will be my first cruise & I have a quick passport question. Someone told me that the cruiseline takes your passport when you board the ship & returns to you at the conclusion of your trip. Is this true?

I just sailed on the Miracle Jan22nd and being Canadian I was a little surprised when the Carnival rep handed me back my passport, I quickly said oh I am Canadian don't I need to surender these to Carnival.... She said they no longer require them....

I don't know why, buy hey that's OK...
