Gregor4500 Posted February 5, 2006 #1 Share Posted February 5, 2006 I can't decide whether to bring our own snorkel gear or to rent. We'll be visiting Caymens, Costo Maya and Ochis Rios. Carrying the mask and snorkel would be no problem, but the fins are big and cumbersome. Any opinions?
Gradelady Posted February 6, 2006 #2 Share Posted February 6, 2006 We always rent the fins if possible...they are too much to pack!
bruce-r Posted February 6, 2006 #3 Share Posted February 6, 2006 If you already own a mask that fits well, then definitely bring it. If you own a snorkel, bring that too. You don't share your toothbrush with strangers, so why would you consider using a rental snorkel that might have been cleaned, but was in all likelihood just rinsed in water. If you want to avoid packing anything, leave the fins at home.
zydecocruiser Posted February 6, 2006 #4 Share Posted February 6, 2006 I think the gear is usually rinsed in a chlorine soap mix and then freshwater, but I always bring the whole enchilada - mask, snorkel, and fins and a lot more. Many cruise ships sell new inexpensive snorkels.

vmom Posted February 8, 2006 #6 Share Posted February 8, 2006 We brought our own and were glad we did. Brought the whole thing...fins, masks and snorkles. We just packed it all in one duffle and checked it in with the luggage. there were several ports that the kids and DH were able to get in a quick snorkle without having to worry about renting equipment. coho ken Posted February 8, 2006 #7 Share Posted February 8, 2006 We bring all (mask, snorkel, and fins) and have just snorkeled from shore on our ports of call. Yes, it is a little extra to carry, but we are beach people and enjoy hanging out and snorkeling from the shore. I especially like the fins for a little extra push and control since I'm not the best of swimmers. Just find a rock (reef) outcropping and you will find the fish usually within 50 yards from shore. Also, bring some granola or cereal from the ship and the fish will find you. We saw the coolest school of squid, must have been 15 or so, in about 5 feet of water off the beach in Cayman last trip. We followed them for a good five minutes watching their colors change all different shades of green and blue as they swam together. Priceless! Enjoy.
