we haven't cruised with couples we already know. I'd say we prefer a table for 8 on Celebrity with the fixed dinnertimes and table. But on NCL with freestyle cruising we liked tables for 4 where you could interact with another couple for an evening. If things go well you can meet again, if not you never have to worry about sitting with them night after night.

 

We really met the most "interesting" people on that cruise, both good and bad, but all interesting in their own way. My favorites were the older Scottish couple that reffered to everything as being "brilliant". VERY knowledgable, very informative and interesting, and a real crack up.

 

I'd just be afraid to end up with incompatible table mates at a table for 4 on Celebrity's smaller ships as there's not a premium alternative till you hit Millenium class, so I'll go with the safety of 8 or more seats.
