HarleyGirl Posted February 12, 2006 #1 Share Posted February 12, 2006 I read some previous posts about people being invited to sit at the captain's table--some of them knew WHY they were invited and others didn't have a clue. I was wondering if staying in a suite has anything to do with it. Did I read that somewhere? Also, which night is usually formal night on the Sensation's 5-night cruise to the W. Carib.? Is formal night when people get invited to the captain's table or could that happen on any night?

jleq Posted February 12, 2006 #3 Share Posted February 12, 2006 The "Captain's Table" can occur any [maybe every] night of you cruise. There is no "surefire way" of knowing whether you'll be invited. [Hey, maybe the same people who determine "upgrades" are also in charge of this...]
derf5585 Posted February 12, 2006 #4 Share Posted February 12, 2006 On NCL Dawn there was a Officers Dinner, not the Captain see my pictures. There is a story, perhaps apocryphal, that the notorious Lady Astor, crossing from Southampton to New York, was invited to dine with the captain. It's said that she declined, stating that she had paid $5,000 (1920s' dollars) for the voyage, and she'd be damned if she was going to eat with the crew. from http://www.looksmarttravel.com/p/articles/mi_m0FCP/is_2_23/ai_78256210
salty dingo Posted February 12, 2006 #5 Share Posted February 12, 2006 I think that suite passengers and very frequent passengers may be offered places at the captain's table. The rest of us better not count on it.

Wennfred Posted February 12, 2006 #7 Share Posted February 12, 2006 About a year or close to 2 years ago when Carnival Vacation Club started, a couple wrote that the ship still didnt have any of the Perks of CVC since it was so new and they didnt get the memo yet. They were invited to sit with the Capt. for a night.

Wennfred Posted February 13, 2006 #10 Share Posted February 13, 2006 Does somebody really care? Just wondering. Yes, I spend a ton of years sailing with the U.S. Navy, I love to sit down and pick this guys brains, Im sure there would be a language barrier and would be cool to ask the Capt some questions. The Capt. is responsible for the everyone on the ship, He gets us over and back safely, people take that for granted.

Beach4me Posted February 13, 2006 #15 Share Posted February 13, 2006 Once on NCL's Norway and once on Carnival's Ecstasy. Both dinner were preceded by quite elegant private cocktail parties with the Captain and other officers. Neither one was on formal night. Both dinners were very interesting. I was lucky enough to sit next to the Captain both times. I LOVE ships and we discussed a lot of the ship systems, etc. Both times, I was invited for a private tour of the bridge the next day. The 'bad' thing is that you are (or at least were back when I ate at the table) pretty much expected to drink what the Captain orders. On the Norway, the officers - including the Captain - were all Norwegian and VERY fond of aquavit. Not being much of a drinker, I wasn't really up for the shots. But, it was made clear to me that I would drink along with the rest of the table. I was too young back then to stand my ground regarding this. Now, I would refuse the drinks - or at least refuse more than the first one. Older and wiser. :) Another thing I remember was that in both cases, the Captain had his favorite dessert prepared (not on the menu) and the table was served his request. But, the dinners were fun. Everyone at the table got a beautiful invitation, a seating chart, and a copy of the pictures taken at dinner by the ship's photographers. Nice remembrances. Hadn't thought about those dinners in a long time. Thanks for prompting the memories!
INCHARGE Posted February 13, 2006 #16 Share Posted February 13, 2006 http://community.webshots.com/photo/1163445150035088204GBaqBO Captain Casula I have dined with the captain on the Destiny. I was invited to join his table, and there was nothing but wonderful conversations all around. What surprised me was that I thought it would be very "stuffy", but we just has a fun time. :) The only problem I had was drinking the wine at dinner. I do not drink at all, but did not want to feel out of place, so I pretended to like it. :D

suz1607 Posted February 13, 2006 #18 Share Posted February 13, 2006 We have cruised quite a bit with different lines and have often been asked to sit at the Captain's table. Usually you meet in the lounge, have drinks of your choice there and are escorted to the Captain's table as a group. We have always ordered off the menu, as I remember, and the Captain has chosen the wine for the whole table. On some lines you are escorted to reserved seats for the show afterwards. We have always enjoyed the varied guests that we meet at the table -- people in suites, passengers on that line many times before , people connected with the travel industry or from the same country as the Captain. Often the hotel manager and/or the doctor are at the table. Sometimes other officers host tables as well. Should you be invited they expect you to talk about other travel experiences or things that the officers have enjoyed as they traveled. -- perhaps their home country or yours. Taboo subjects include problems with the ship or shipline, seasickness and things of that type. Some Captains do not enjoy hosting a table so you will find that it is not done everytime or on all ships. The Social Hostess used to make the decision as to who was invited but more often now the decision is made by the "home office".
