Rare many cruises Posted March 2, 2006 #26 Share Posted March 2, 2006 Can anyone recommend a 1 hour tour in Sitka? We want to spend some time walking around in Sitka, but would also like to take a short tour of it.
badger71 Posted March 3, 2006 #27 Share Posted March 3, 2006 we wer on the summit in august 2005 the absolute best was in juneau we did 2 trips one was a helicopter to mendenhall it was really fantastic but the highlight was the replica indian canoe in juneau to the base of mendenhall the trip is restricted to 2 canoes the guide was wonderful at first we thought she was a 20 something valley girl but in reality early 40's, mother of 2 she kept up a stream of conversation for over a couple of hrs the break on a beach right next to a large waterfall coming off the glacier was spectacular there you are, on a sand beach, eating some crackers and sausage or salmon spread, a large waterfall behind you, the glacier over your right shoulder, and icebergs floating right in fronmt of you(small ones) breathtaking trip we were both 56 not in the best of shape and we did the paddling without difficulty the misty fjiord float planes were really something (in ketchikan) but a bit nerve rattling they are 5 seaters i guess we are a bit weak kneed but the beauty from the plane was sensational and the landing on a mountain lake was worth it we had fabulous almost unheard of weather for 2 weeks which obviously added to the experiences have a great trip:)
knuyens Posted March 4, 2006 #28 Share Posted March 4, 2006 Cruised last July 1 2005. In Juneau 4 glacier helicopter tour booked on ship was the most fantastic excursion to date, with landings on glacier. Snorkeled in Ketchikan, and then Best of Skagway which included bus and train ride up and down the Whitepass with a tour of Liarsville with outdoor stage show and followed up with a salmon bake lunch. Scenery is second to none even in rainy or foggy conditions as almost always in site of land on entire trip so hours and hours on deck watching and seeing whales all along the trip. Humpback straight out of water 150 meters off bow in wake of ship at 5 am in the morning was the biggest highlite for me. Will do again. Sailed on Holland America as won cruise. Zaandam is a great ship and small so has priority to go into smaller fiyords.
