Taxis in St John?

Recommended Posts

I am traveling solo and want to do St. John on my own as opposed to doing a ship tour which gives you less time. I know that you catch a taxi to Red Hook and catch the ferry to St. John. My question is when you get off, how is the taxi situation to and from Trunk Bay. Is catching a taxi a problem? How many passengers do the taxis hold. If I remember correctly, I thought the taxis held 10-15 passengers but that may have been a tour. There was something on the USVI website that stated if you called a taxi for yourself you had to pay fare for up to six passengers. If it is going to be to big of a hassle, then I will just take the ship tour and have less time on St. John.

Thanks for your help.

We did Trunk Bay on our own in '02 and had no trouble whatsoever. Trunk Bay may be THE single most popular destination for people ferrying over, and taxis / jitneys were plentiful. Even with a large jitney it shouldn't be a problem finding others to share it, with no more than a short wait.

"These moments we’re left with - may you always remember
These moments are shared, by few
And those harbor lights, lord they’re coming into view
We’ll bid our farewells much too soon
So drink it up, this one’s for you -
Honey, it’s been a lovely cruise."

MJ,

Our family of 4 has taken the ferry from Red Hook to St. John (the location the ferry docks at on St. John is called Cruz Bay), on several occasions. There have always been cabs waiting at the dock to take you to wherever you want to go on St. John. I know that the cab fares on St. Thomas are fixed between destinations and I assume they are also on St. John. If you take a cab to Trunk Bay, you can ask the cab driver to return at a certain time (we've always asked, but have never had a cab driver return at the time we asked). However, there have ALWAYS been cabs available at Trunk Bay for the return to Cruz Bay.

Remember to check the ferry schedule for when you plan to leave from Red Hook and when you plan to return from Trunk Bay. Whereas there isn't much around the ferry at Red Hook, there are some shops and places to get something to eat/drink at Cruz Bay.

Enjoy Trunk Bay, we love it!!

Steve

Whenever there are ships in port at Charlotte Amalie, the taxi drivers will be aware of it on St. John as well. You can't miss them as they will be eager to take you wherever you want to go. The drivers with larger vans will try to fill up before heading out to your destination. Here's a link to the ferry schedule:

We had no problem doing just what you're wanting to do on our own (for the first time) on our cruise last March.

As mentioned, there were plenty of cabs going and coming. We went early then left about 1:30 to catch the 2:00 ferry back to St Maartenand it worked out good for us. In June we're going to attempt going to Tortola...same place, different ferry.

Happy Cruising

Catching taxis/cabs in St. Thomas and taking the ferry acroSs to St. John (Cruz Bay) and exploring the island is a great way to spend your day.

Head to Red Hook Bay (by taxi - $8.00 p/p), then catch the ferry to St. John (15-20 minute ride @ $3.00 p/p one way) and GO to Trunk Bay by taxi ($4.00 p/p plus a $4.00 charge entrance fee - cold showers included)!!

This is an absolutely beautiful beach with great white sand and crystal blue water. There is a food stall and rental station for snorkelling equipment.

Then take a return cab (the cabs can carry up to 12 people) and ride back to Cruz Bay (again $4.00) for a few drinks at Duffy's Love Shack - before catching the ferry back to Charlotte Amaile (45 minute ride @ $7.00 p/p)! Then shop/drink a little and head back to ship ($2.50-$3.00 p/p)!
