d4l Posted February 16, 2006 #1 Share Posted February 16, 2006 Me and my wife are planning our 2nd cruise(1st w/children). We have a 4 yr old and a 17 month old. We were told that the rate is the same regardless of age. How do they justify charging a 17 month old the same fare they would charge a grown man? Because each passenger on board takes up a berth. Doesn't matter how old they are. So because you have your 17 month old as a 4th passenger, that is one less 4th passenger berth they have available to sell. As for "deals" on 4rd and 4th passengers, it usually depends on when you are cruising (summer, spring break, and holidays are popular times so there is usually little discount). You might look at Norwegian Cruise Lines or Disney as I have heard (but can't guarantee) that they have deals for younger passengers. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It may not seem fair, but that's the way it is. However, the third (and fourth) passenger in a cabin is charged a lesser rate - at least on Carnival. I don't know about other lines. Since each passenger is assured a bed, that bed must be made up by the cabin steward each day, as well as the general cleaning of the cabin. Granted, children don't eat as much as an adult, but they do eat, and somebody has to clean up after them, just as they do for adults. Also - Children do not contribute more revenue for the cruiselines in the casino, lounges, etc., so they make up for that. Probably other reasons, as well, but that's pretty much it in a nutshell. When we registered, they put our grandbaby (2 years 4 months) in a room with us. The parents are in adjoining room next door and they said they couldn't list 3 people in that room (superior balcony) because it wasn't big enough with the door connecting the rooms. The baby's cost was 70% LESS than ours and 55% less than the other 4 adults that are going (again, in superior balcony) Not sure how that all worked out. It's nice that at least one cruiseline doesn't allow babies under the age of one year to cruise.
