Train from LaSpezia to Florence and return

We are overnight in LaSpezia on May 30 and would like to spend the day in Florence. We have been several times so don't need a tour . Anyone have experience taking the train or tips?

It's nice not to have to rush back because Florence really isn't a reasonable day trip from La Spezia.

 

When you look at trains don't just focus on the departure time, check also the total travel time because there are big variations.

 

For example, the 8:16 departure takes one hour, forty five minutes to get to Florence.  The 8:21 train takes three and a half hours.

 

All trains require a change, some at Pisa Centrale, others at Viareggio.
