Covid policy if leaving from Vancouver?

Recommended Posts

The Covid quarantine policy was updated on April 22 and gives guidance for ships starting from US and European ports. I don't see any mention about Canadian or other ports.  Am I missing something?

From https://www.celebritycruises.com/content/dam/celebrity/pdf/cel-covid-19-cancellations-and-refunds-policy.pdf

"For all Celebrity cruises scheduled to sail from the European Union or the United Kingdom between May 1, 2022 and November 30, 2022, inclusive, if you test positive for COVID-19 during the voyage: • Celebrity will cover the cost of necessary COVID-19 related medical treatment onboard the ship; • you and members of your Traveling Party may stay onboard the ship to complete any required quarantine period, without needing to pay additional cruise fare, stateroom gratuities or taxes/fees to Celebrity for the same; and • Celebrity will assist with coordinating travel arrangements to get you and members of your Traveling Party back home, but will not be responsible for any associated costs. • For all Celebrity cruises scheduled to sail from the U.S. on or before May 17, 2022, and those scheduled to sail from the European Union or the United Kingdom between May 1, 2022 and November 30, 2022, inclusive: • If a guest who purchased flights through Celebrity is denied boarding at embarkation or reboarding, or is disembarked during the voyage due to a positive COVID-19 test or being suspected of having COVID-19, Celebrity will coordinate the travel arrangements, and cover the airline change fees and any difference in the airfare for the same class of service, necessary to fly the guest back to the city of their original flight departure point. If such a guest did not purchase flights through Celebrity, Celebrity will assist with coordinating travel arrangements necessary to get the guest back home but will not be responsible for any associated costs."

It is there- it just isn't terribly easy to find. Do read the top paragraph before going to the Vancouver section.

Huh, I'm not seeing anything about what happens if you get test positive for covid while on board in this doc.  These seem to be the rules for boarding the ship proving you don't have covid and are vaccinated.

The other doc that is specific to US and European sailings spells out what Celebrity will cover beyond the cost of any testing. Things like if you test positive onboard and need to quarantine for more than the number of days left on your sailing, you can stay on board to finish your quarantine.

I wonder if it is covered by the Government of Canada requirements. Check the section headed If there are cases of COVID-19 on board a cruise ship

Here is another link that specifies cruise lines must arrange and pay for appropriate quarantine if the passenger is positive during the cruise. It is dated April 1. I do not know if that is the most recent update.

Celebrity is ending onshore assistance as part of its policy; nevertheless, it must abide by local regulations. I guess it remains to be seen how this plays out.

But many cruises out of Vancouver are one way, ending in the USA. Hard to see how Canadian law (or regulations or whatever) would govern Celebrity's actions once it is back in US waters. But maybe it is a part of a contract which allows the ships to dock in Canada?

Sure. The policy applies to all cruise lines but seems to address ships disembarking in Canada. I expect it is to prevent a number of positive cases being dumped for them to deal with.

Not sure how it applies if one tests positive at embarkation or at the airport after disembarkation.

Thanks so much for this information!  This was exactly the kind of information I was looking for since my son and I are on a RT Alaska cruise out of Vancouver.  We also have travel insurance, so we are covered.  Looks like Canada's isolation/quarantine is longer than the US - 14 days instead of 5.

Your travel insurance will cover quarantine under Trip Interruption and/or Trip Delay. The Trip Delay benefits are capped at a dollar amount listed in the policy. Here’s hoping it is enough for 14 days - or better yet - that you do not need it at all.

This ALL makes my head spin.  I had a post on as well regarding the timeliness of disembarkation testing and cell service or ship WiFi functionality.  Our flight to USA is at 12:45 on day of disembarkation.  I fear missing the flight due to delay in results.  If one tests positive at disembarkation, who forces them to quarentine?

Not sure about logistics of quarantine at testing sites, but you will not be able to board your flight with a positive test. Your options for other forms of transportation are likely to be limited at the last minute. Reservations for the shuttle bus to Seattle or a rent car need to be made ahead of time.

Exactly.  I find this with sketchy WiFi and potential of no cell service to be ridiculous.  How can anyone truly plan?

You would stay in Canada for 14 days?  I can drive home in 3

I can’t say how likely one is to test positive, but just the possibility along with the difficulty of testing and getting to the airport in time was enough for us to rework our return plans.

We’ll drive to Seattle and catch an early flight the next day for what turns out to be a better flight than we had from YVR. The new flight is nonstop arriving mid-afternoon for an easier drive home. Fortunately we were able to change with no fee - just the cost of the rent car, which is fairly significant for one day, but it is worth it to me. It just takes a lot of wrinkles out of that last part of the trip.

What rental agency did you use? When I looked this up it said no  one way rental that included a border crossing was allowed. I went ahead and got a quote from a limo company that would take us from the cruise ship pier in Vancouver to seatac. Wondering how comparable a rental of a car is versus their price quote.   Plus it would be nice with someone else driving us, since we do not know the path so to speak.  This whole bit has really ripped a hole in our travel sails.  (No pun intended).  Enough so that we are considering cancelling.  That would be #10 since our 8/2019 cruise that would go into that file

We rented from Avis. We made the reservation a couple of weeks ago without a problem, but there may not be any cars available now for cross border drop off. The cost was $442CAD, which is about $342 at today’s exchange rate, for an intermediate size car.

There is a Quick Shuttle bus that picks up at the pier to Sea-Tac. I did a dummy booking out of curiosity.  There are a couple of options, but it seems the bus makes some stops along the way at a few hotels, a casino or shopping outlet. The trip takes about 4 hours.  Someone else is doing the driving, and the cost was about $70pp with luggage.

AmTrac may offer a bus as well since the train is not running yet. I did not pursue it.

A limo is decidedly nicer and gives you more control.

I feel your frustration.  If you purchased your ticket before 11/16/21, Celebrity would provide free of charge a test for you to enter back in the US.  If after, they will also offer at an approx. charge of $99. I would say hope for the best, and if you do test positive, you could still drive.  You would have to quarantine somewhere, as flying with covid wouldn't be good.

Can you change your flight to later in the day?
