wework2play Posted March 2, 2006 #1 Share Posted March 2, 2006 What do dh, dd, etc. mean?? I feel so stupid, but I'll never know unless I ask. I can assume that the 2nd letter is husband, or daughter, and so on. Someone please make this easy for me. :(
Teachlady Posted March 2, 2006 #2 Share Posted March 2, 2006 You're correct.. Dear Husband, Dear Daughter, Dear Son.. etc.
DJan07 Posted March 2, 2006 #3 Share Posted March 2, 2006 What about IMHO? I think there is another similiar one, but I could be wrong. What do those mean? Derek
SuiteCruiser Posted March 2, 2006 #4 Share Posted March 2, 2006 In My Humble Opinion. Some also add YMMV meaning Your Mileage May Vary which really means, you may have different experiences, outcomes, etc. Hope this helps!
sanjoseca Posted March 2, 2006 #5 Share Posted March 2, 2006 It's more fun if you substitute Dumb for Dear.....and no one has to know that you are doing it. YMMV

skiiergirl Posted March 2, 2006 #7 Share Posted March 2, 2006 A year or so ago someone posted them all here or a link to a list with all of them. However, I think the boards have been "reworked" since then so the post may be gone. Hopefully whoever posted that will see this thread and post it again. It really enlightened me and made me not feel so much like a dummy. LOL...Laugh or Laughing Out Loud ROFL....Rolling On Floor Laughing LMAO....Laughing My A$$ Off DH...Dear, Dearest, Darling, Dumba$$ Husband DS....Dear, Dearest, Darling Son DD.....Dear, Dearest, Darling Daughter MIL...Mother In Law FIL....Father In Law SIL...can't remember....son in law or sister in law BIL ...brother in law DIL...daughter in law IMHO...In My Honest Opinion or In My Humble Opinion There were several pages of these and I don't remember them all. skiiergirl Posted March 2, 2006 #8 Share Posted March 2, 2006 OK...did a "search" and here are some "lists" from a prior thread a few months back. Hope I can get them to show up here. If not, please forgive me....I am a computer dummy. But I'm going to give it a try. In case you are bored: ASAP = As soon as possible ATM = At The Moment AYT = Are you there? BBL = Be Back Later BF = Boy Friend BIL = Brother in Law BL = Belly laughing! BRB = Be Right Back BTW = By The Way DD = Dearest Daughter, Darling Daughter, etc DF= Dear Fiance DH = Dear Hubby (Or Husband) , Darling Hubby, Darn Hubby, Dumb Hubby, etc DIKU = Do I know you? DS = Dearest Son, Darling Son, etc F2F = Face to face FAO = For attention of FAQ = Frequently asked question FIL = Father in Law FWIW = For what it’s worth FYI = For Your Information GF = Girl Friend GMTA = Great Minds Think Alike IM = Instant message IMCO = In my considered opinion IMHO = In My Humble Opinion IRL = In real life ISO = In search of JK = Just Kidding LOL = Laughing Out Loud or Lots of Laughs MIL = Mother in Law OIC = Oh, I see! OMG = Oh My Gosh! OP + Original poster OT = Off Topic OTOH = On the other hand PITA = Pain in the “acronym” (Use this if a board friend has gotten a little heavy handed with acronyms) PITA = Pain In the A$$ POV = Point of View PTMM = Please tell me more ROFL or ROTFL = Rolling on the Floor Laughing ROFLMAO = Rolling on the Floor Laughing My A$$ Off SIL = Sister in Law SO = Significant Other SU = Spousal Unit TG = Thank Goodness TGIF = Thank Goodness It's Friday! TIA = Thanks in Advance TMI = Too Much Information There are other abbreviations or phrases I've seen exclusively about cruising that took me awhile to figure out. Maybe there could be a permanent sticky thread for new people? I'm thinking of: PAX -- passengers AFT -- back of the boat (not an abbrv, but could be confusing) C & A -- Crown & Anchor Docs -- documents CD -- cruise director (not the musical disc) TA -- travel agent MED cruise -- mediterranian (don't laugh, I 1st thought it meant a special medical needs cruise :o ) PC -- i still don't know what this means! I use "PC" for Panama Canal.

firstcruise05 Posted March 2, 2006 #10 Share Posted March 2, 2006 DH could also stand for Damn husband (or DW too...we don't want to be gender biased now :p ) AS far as PC goes...we had a conversation about that in a different thread. PC could mean: Personal Computer Politically Correct Port Canaveral Panama Canal Personal Companion (or Personal chef) You can usually figure it out by seeing it in context. The abbreviations that get to me are the ship abbreviations...since there ARE ships that have the same first letter. For instance: MOS - what the hell is that supposed to mean? Could be the Mariner...or wait, maybe its the Monarch...perhaps its the Majesty? Every post that abbreviates the ships name should have the ship written out at least once in that post...that way we know which ship we are reading about. Then it can be abbreviated for the rest of the thread. But, that's JMHO, FWIW :p (just my honest opinion, for what its worth). You think these abbreviations are fun...try going over to the disboards...I have to leave one window open to their FAQ of abbreviations in order to read the posts over there. Murphy Posted March 2, 2006 #11 Share Posted March 2, 2006 TA could also mean transatlantic instead of travel agent TTYL talk to you later And of course there are the airport abbreviations: FLL Fort Lauderdale MIA Miami SJU San Juan TPA Tampa

Steamboatin Posted March 2, 2006 #13 Share Posted March 2, 2006 My military days reminds me of SOL and SOS. And there was always after a period of time at a location you became FIGMO. Meanings cannot be said in polite society.:D
crusinmama06 Posted March 2, 2006 #14 Share Posted March 2, 2006 These abbrevations aren't just the Cruise Critic abbreviations. ANY board you are on share the same ones. It's just short hand for computer users. I've been using bulletins boards (bbs) for about 6 years so it has come to a point where sometimes IRL (in real life) I actually say outloud computer speak. :p I don't know how many times I have thought about conversations being "thread jacked" (meaning someone takes over the topic from the "op" original poster) After a while, you get used to them, ykwim (ya know what I mean) :D

Meanings cannot be said in polite society.:D Steamboatin, I know SOS and SOL, but FIGMO is new to me (although I understand SNAFU and FUBAR). Can you post at least some of the words in FIGMO? I suspect that the "F" is the same one in SNAFU and FUBAR ... right  Gotta know ..... PS: Polite Society? macnbc Posted March 2, 2006 #19 Share Posted March 2, 2006 One that drives me nuts is that sometimes Royal Caribbean is abbreviated here as "RCCL" (Royal Caribbean Cruise Line) while others abbreviate it as "RCI" (Royal Caribbean International) Consistency people! lawsoncd3 Posted March 2, 2006 #20 Share Posted March 2, 2006 Thank goodness you asked OP (original poster) (See, I'm getting it now). I was going crazy but didn't know what board to post it on... I finally realized what TA meant, and it's not what it means here in Vegas... LOL. I feel enlightened and smart and .... giddy! (Ok, it's late and I need to go to bed...) Steamboatin Posted March 2, 2006 #23 Share Posted March 2, 2006 FIGMO is "@$%&" it, got my orders. In this version the "I" is understood and not mentioned. The other Colonel's FIIGMO is "@$%&" it I got my orders. FIGMO is used when an individual receives their orders to relocate to another location on a permanent basis. They are a short timer. Depending on where their new location is the individual could be either happy (going to a good location or being discharged) or unhappy (going to a poor location or to an isolated duty location without their family). Normally used in a joking way by others referring to you as being an individual that is not looking to doing much work. If used by yourself you are saying that you are looking to get out of work.
