Train in Morocco?

We will be in port 13 hours in Casablanca. I am considering taking the train R/T to Marrakech rather than the ship's tour. Has anyone else done this? Pros or cons? It seems like a very cheap, efficient train system.

Casablanca to Marrakesh and back in less than 13 hours is a long trip on train or bus for a short stay in a very fascinating city that really deserves more time. If you go independant of the ship and try to maximize your time in Marrakesh by a tight return time then any unexpected delay is a world of trouble. A closer city to Casablanca that is quite interesting is Rabat. A day trip there allows a lot more time to see the sights, but it is not Marrakesh. I'd strongly recommend coming back to Marrakesh when you can spend more time there, but if you must go, take the "ship" tour for peace of mind, and the train tour if you like to live dangerously. Enjoy
