cruisecountess Posted December 14, 2022 #1 Share Posted December 14, 2022 Does anyone know if there’s a mahjong set onboard the Marina? If there is, does it need to be reserved or is it first come, first served? Will the social hostess organize games or would I need to find other players? Thanks
eabb Posted December 14, 2022 #2 Share Posted December 14, 2022 Yes, at least four on recent Transatlantic. No reservation necessary.
Rare msn123 Posted December 15, 2022 #3 Share Posted December 15, 2022 Sign up sheets will be in the card room. Then put together your own game from those who sign up. there may also be unhosted times suggested in Currents.
Robjame Posted December 15, 2022 #4 Share Posted December 15, 2022 Question for the players: Can Mahjong be picked up by a complete newbie? I know it’s not the same as the match games on line Thanks

Rare BigCheese1 Posted January 3, 2023 #6 Share Posted January 3, 2023 Not sure how many Brits play Mah Jong. I do. I know MJ is quite popular in the States. I have played “American” Mah Jong on numerous cruises. British-played MJ is (I think) a bit nearer to Chinese MJ and differs from American. In our village we don’t score the tiles, it’s too complicated and time consuming. We just say who won that hand. We don’t use the joker, and don’t do a Charleston each time, only when no one wins the hand before. We don’t have a yearly card. We just have hundreds of hands to choose from (but there are say ~30 common ones). Hands can be say ‘3 philosophers’, ‘Gertie’s garter’, ‘triple knitting’, ‘windy chow’, etc. Tile names are different, we have ‘Bamboos’ , I think you have Bams. We have white dragon, you have ‘soap’, we have characters you have craks. When I first played American I accidentally called Mah Jong. The ladies counted me out, quite ruthless - it’s only a game! Quite often the sets on cruise ships are missing tiles, which then won’t work. Looking forward to a hand or two (Marina - Lima to Miami - March 2023).
