Ouvea

Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone has been to Ouvea? It is one of the ports on the cruise I am booked on (N614 - April 30th - 52 more days, Yay!) and have not read much about it on this forum.

Is there anything to do there or is just beach. Have had a quick search of the net and seen a few pics. It looks just gorgeous!

Thanks for your help.

:D

It is "OOO-VAY-AH"

It is a beautiful beach, lovely soft sand, no coral hence no snorkelling. There isn't a lot more to do but the locals are incredibly friendly. You can hire a Hobie Cat or sea kayak from the locals. It is not like Mystery Island in that cruise ships are very new to the Ouveans so what you can buy is quite limited. Having said that the people are charming and the simple lifestyle is fascinating. For example the locals brought a bucket full of turtles for the kids on our cruise to hold. They also brought some coconut crabs and spiders for the kids to hold.

It is about a 20 minute walk from the tender dock to the beach but you can go in a car for $3 if you prefer.

Its the most beautiful place I have seen in a while. P&O have only just started going there. When were were on the Pacific Princess in January, we had the full welcome ceremony there with the captain. As stated, its about a 20 minute walk to the village. There were a few stalls set up along the way selling coconut milk. The water is so clean but no coral. The local children were told to stay away from us which was a shame. We spent a lovely morning there and caught the 'taxi service' (the locals just use their private cars to run a shuttle for about $3) and went back to the ship for lunch. The locals have a stall that sells food but I wasn't really sure whether the food was safe. Nothing was kept on ice or anything. There was just one thing - about half way along the road to the village is a ceremonial area that is out of bounds for tourists - there were a lot of people swimming there though which I thought was a bit rude as we were specially told to stay away from the area. None of the locals speak English so it was a little hard to communicate but pointing and smiling when a long way. :D

They told us it was 25 k's of beach and as far as I could see it was, It's a long thin strip of land with a beautiful beach, there is only one road which runs the full length of the island.

Thanks everyone. I too wondered how to pronounce the name. I'm really looking forward to going there. It will be nice to go to a place that isn't overly commercialised and that you can still see how the locals really live.
