mlbcruiser Posted March 19, 2023 #1 Share Posted March 19, 2023 Wondering if anyone out there who has taken a regular bus tour to Mendenhall glacier, could answer a few questions. Would the terrain at the sightseeing areas in the park and around the visitor center be difficult for someone with a a bit of a walking disability? We are considering doing the blue bus to Mendenhall glacier. While my DH can walk a fairly good distance, although just a bit slower than a normal gait, he must be careful. Hilly trails & bumpy, rocky, terrain or icy ground can be difficult to undoable for him. He often avoids areas require a very good balancing ability. We have a small foldable travel scooter, but of course, would not expect to be bringing that on this particular tour as I’m pretty sure it would be impossible to use there. Any information about the destination would be helpful.
dfilpus Posted March 19, 2023 #2 Share Posted March 19, 2023 Around the Visitor Center, there are largely level sidewalks with a few steps on the way out to Photo Point. The Visitor Center is elevated from the main walking paths. There is an elevator up to the Visitor Center. It will be slow going, but doable for someone with mobility issues.
mlbcruiser Posted March 19, 2023 Author #3 Share Posted March 19, 2023 Mendenhall does have ADA accessibility. You can get more information here: https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/tongass/about-forest/offices/?cid= The above reply to was posted by Coram a few minutes ago on my duplicate question post. (Huge thank you to her!) i guess the powers that be pulled that duplicate post off which is fine. Since that title is now missing. I just hit the back button a number of times until I got to it, copied the post on that thread and moved it onto this one so others can see it. mlbcruiser Posted March 19, 2023 Author #4 Share Posted March 19, 2023 dfilpus, got me thinking maybe we can bring the scooter. I can just fold it up into suitcase, size and lift it down the steps. DH will probably tell me not to bring it though.
