winemaker1 Posted March 24, 2023 #1 Share Posted March 24, 2023 Has anyone done this trip? I assume I would taxi from Southampton port to Portsmouth, what is the ferry like? Then taxi from ferry in Caen into city center.

gumshoe958 Posted March 24, 2023 #3 Share Posted March 24, 2023 Either a taxi from Southampton to Portsmouth (it’s about 20 miles, a half hour drive) or there are normally two trains an hour (taking 40-60 mins), although you’d need a cab to and from the station at each end. Rare John Bull Posted March 25, 2023 #4 Share Posted March 25, 2023 If the timing is right you can take a National Express coach from Southampton coach station direct to to Portsmouth International Port - fare as low as £5, journey time just under an hour. https://www.nationalexpress.com/en Or direct trains from Southampton Central are more frequent, still inexpensive but then a taxi hop from "Portsmouth & Southsea" station to the International Port. That's not the same port as local ferries to Gosport or the Isle of Wight. https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ If you prefer a private transfer don't just take a taxi from the line at the cruise terminal - they're metered and altho the rate is worth the convenience for a hop within the city - eg to the coach or train station - they'll be expensive for the 20+ miles to Portsmouth. So pre-book a private transfer from port to port. Try https://westquaycars.com/ https://gunwharf-executive-travel.co.uk/ https://www.aquacars.co.uk/ Brittany Ferries used to lay on a coach from the port in Ouistreham to Caen train station but that now appears to have been discontinued. They instead link a local bus service, it's less than €2, but if it's as poor as their website you might want to take a taxi from the rank for the 20 minute / 11 mile drive. https://www.twisto.fr/ We've sailed that route quite a few times, decent service & decent food, inexpensive for foot-passengers. But we've always been by car. JB 🙂
