Rooms Safes

Does anyone know just how secure the room safes are on the Magica? I know you need a magnetic strip card to lock them, but I'm sure there must be some way to open them, if for instance you would lose that card. My DH seems to feel that the safes might not be so safe if there are employees on the ship that have access to safe opening equipment.

Also I posted a similar question on the "ask a cruise question" board - does anyone take their wallets with them when you go into port? I'd be really concerned about pickpockets, etc.

Thanks for your help!

They are pretty secure. They can only be opened by the card that locks them, so if you lock it and your husband tries to open it, his card will not unlock it.

My wife had to get into ours and the Room Steward could not open it for her.

I always took my wallet with me into port, usual big city precautions are in order.

the safes on the magica are very secure. they are basically there to cover the room stewards 'a**'. if something is gone from your room, it is now your fault for not locking it up. but at no time did i feel i HAD to use the safe, our room steward was cool. and i felt very secure on the boat. the safes are made from thick steel, the hinges are internal and tamper proof, and the bolt that locks it is 1" diameter steel.

if you loose the card that you locked it with you could be in for a lot of work!

i seriuosly doubt that regular employees have access to safe opening equipment. but i would assume that yes if you did loose the card there could be a way if you talked to the right person high up on the ship that the safe could be opened in an emergency.

here's what i did

when i was on the ship, all important stuff was locked up, wallet, keys, tickets, passport, credit cards, cash. when i walked around on the ship i only needed two things, my costa card and my photo id (incase i was getting a beer, i'm 27 so i get carded a lot)

when i went off to port i took my id, costa card, and wallet with just cash to buy stuff. i took the minimum so if it gets stolen i'm not out a lot.

When we were at the top of Dunns River Falls we saw a young couple talking/arguing to a jamaican guide that they had lost thier ID's and ship cards somewhere on the falls. I felt bad for them and dont know what i would do in a situation like that. Somewhere i remember reading that if there is a problem on land go to the Port agency which the ship is registered with at that port. The port agent for the day is listed on the front page of your Today mag. i'm sure they're not the first person to loose thier ID and costa card while on land so i'm sure there's a way to fix it all.

The housekeeping supervisor can open the safe - I found out by losing my card. Actually, I left it on the bed, and my room steward made up the bed with the card between the sheets, so I found it again that night. The folks at the service desk seemed tro be used to my type of request.

The card that closes the safe must open it. So if you use your room key your spouse will not be able to open it. You can get around this by using a credit card that you have a copy of. Contact credit card company before the cruise, since mine was wearing out and had them send me a replacement card. Gave my original card to my wife and that way either one of us could open it without any issues. The info on the magnetic strip need to be the same. (note hotel cards do not work).

i don't know if we can order two identical credit cards from banks. also, if we use credit card, will card data on magnet strip be recorded?

obveously its recorded in some type of memory in the safe because the safe needs to remember the magnetic data and compare that to any card swiped to open it.

now what you mean is it secure, is it recorded as in anyone can look at it, no, its a very rudementary magnetic electronic system. it would be very hard to extract that infromation from the safe which by that time they would probably be more interested in what is actually in the safe rather than some credit card numbers.

I'm just planning on using 2 old "casino" cards. I usually get two (in my name)from them, so I thought both hubby & I could use them to lock and open the safe. Then there would be no worries about anyone accessing any credit card info.

meaning that only supervisor, as YUKON said, with a master magnet card can override the code and open the safe. i just wish she/he would not lose the master key.

I also took my casino cards thinking hubby & I could use them both--they didn't work--BUT--my credit card did...so I just used my room key & hubby only opened when I was with, didn't see if he could open after I locked with credit card..just decided not to use it. I also put the camera in the safe sometimes--although I think things were safe in the room--just didn't want to tempt anyone.

Your room cardkey functions as the key to the safe. And, yes, as others have said, THE cardkey that locked it last only can open it next. Frankly, the credit card scenario someone above described sounds way to complicated. I would suggest to simply mark the cardkey with a marker or sticker of some sort, or, as someone else suggest, punch a hole it it.

If you loose your cardkey/safekey, simply go immediately to the reception desk. They can void the existing key, issue new keys so you can get into your cabin and they will send a manager to your cabin to meet you to unlock the safe. :)
