Michaelw5 Posted March 21, 2006 #1 Share Posted March 21, 2006 We leave on April 8th on the Sun and was wondering if anyone has traveled recently with young children? We have a 4 year old boy who is sometimes shy so we are not sure what to expect. Thanks.........
silkhair1 Posted March 21, 2006 #2 Share Posted March 21, 2006 We were on the Star in March and I think all the programs are the same. My boys are 5 and 2 and I told them they were going to school. My 5 year old loves school (pre-school) and my 2 year old want to go there so badlly. They were fine. The LOVED the program and the things they did. They usually had their faces painted and had a craft item everytime we picked them up. There were movies and a ball pit jumpy thing. I was nervous, but they were fine. After my first drop off (I did not want to leave the area) and when I picked them up and they were so excited I never thought about leaving them there again. It was easy because they had so much fun. Your son should be fine. There will be other kids his age there so that always helps. Have a great trip!!!!!

psmarkle Posted March 23, 2006 #9 Share Posted March 23, 2006 Michaelw5: we are also going on the April 8th sailing of the Sun with our 6-yr-old son. This will be his 6th cruise and he now enjoys the kid's programs! When we sailed on the Norweigan Sky 3 yrs ago, he wouldn't stay in the program unless we were in the room, but by the time he hit 4 yrs old he couldn't wait to leave us to go to the program :-) I believe they assign you a beeper and if there are any problems, they buzz you to come to the Kid's room. I think your son is going to have a great time! Look forward to seeing fellow CC'ers on board at the get together!
4 of Harts Posted March 23, 2006 #10 Share Posted March 23, 2006 I have a 3 and a 5 year old and they have been in either NCL's Kids Club or Carnival's since the minimum age of 2 (4 cruises total). It allows you to take a breather and enjoy your cruise and you'll find that he'll probably have as much fun as you. (only in a different way) NCL is a little different where you have to watch the included hours and what is considered "Group Sitting". Group sitting is $5 / hour for the 1st kid, $3 add'l for each add'l family member. Affordable but it can run you up if you do 8 per day at 6 days ($240). For the most part they want you to have your kids around lunch or dinner but you can pay to keep them/him in the club. My only advice is that you need to keep a rough track of how much time he's in there as sometimes the "Group Sitters" have had enough of Mom and Dad dropping and running. Like any type of service , it pays to kill them with kindness and to keep tabs with their feelings of your child (among probably 5-10 others) and if you are "abusing" the priviledge. Stick around a few add'l seconds unless they tell you to hit it. They do have the ability to advise you strongly to take your child for awhile. Go to the meeting on the first day, sign up immediately and take a strong interest in their activities that way you can advise him of what is coming up etc. so as to get him excited about it. The ladies (possibly men but I've only encountered lady Kids Crew Members) are extremely good at what they do. They have special sections to eat and you'll see them around the ship from time to time doing search activities or traveling from deck to deck. Hopefully that answers your questions/concerns. Enjoy the freedom and the satisfaction that your child is in great hands and also enjoying. :)
Michaelw5 Posted March 24, 2006 Author #11 Share Posted March 24, 2006 4 of Hearts- Thanks for the info. I know this is a NCL post but doesn's Carnival and RCCL have longer times for the kids in the pay area for free? Not that it matters but for future reference. 4 of Harts Posted March 24, 2006 #12 Share Posted March 24, 2006 Yes, Carnival does have quite alot more hours. I chose this trip for the destinations (Eastern Carib) as I haven't been to 2 of the 4. Always nice to see new places. The disadvantage is that they have almost too many hours if that makes sense. The kids love it, and you love it but the staff can potentially become overwhelmed. I'll let you know how NCL does in comparison but the fact that they have anything is beyond wonderful. As I'm not paying daycare during that week I look at the hours that I have to pay as the equivalent. You guys will have a wonderful time. Your son will enjoy the time with you even more as will you if it isn't all the time.

4 of Harts Posted March 24, 2006 #14 Share Posted March 24, 2006 We leave April 1, Eastern Caribbean. I've been told that once I have a suite, especially the Sky Suite that I'll never go back to any other cabin... except the Owner's Suite. I hope that they're right :D Maybe I'll just hit big in the casino and I'll book it right there.
