DISNEY GIRL Posted December 26, 2023 #1 Share Posted December 26, 2023 Hello all - We dock at 7am and our flight home is not until 11pm at night, so we are looking at a tour (private or smallish) to give us a tour of Hong Kong, then take us to the airport - with our suitcases in the trunk. any recommendations please? Rare John Bull Posted December 27, 2023 #2 Share Posted December 27, 2023 Hopefully someone will come up with something which fits the bill, but .................... Hong Kong is the sort of place to meander the streets, markets, waterfront & parks on foot, cross the harbour by ferry rather than MTR or road tunnels (to Wan Chai is much more interesting & easier on the feet than Central), travel by the island's rickety old trams, by MTR (mass-transit railway) and by bus, mebbe up or down (or both) Victoria Peak by tram, and the "mid-levels" by their seriously-long covered outdoor escalator system. None of which are well-suited to a "tour" I'm a fan of ho-hos, but because of the geography & traffic I don't rate the one in HK highly - others might disagree. And with just one truncated day, a tour into the New Territories would be a waste of precious time. Can I suggest that you explore independently, You'll need a luggage facility - perhaps research the cruise terminal or a transportation centre, but not the airport which is too far out. Return to collect your luggage at an appropriate time, & take a taxi to the airport. Not all taxi drivers speak English, so be prepared to play charades (how difficult can it be to indicate airplanes) or show your air tickets. (Most HK taxis are small - they hold only 3 passengers, or two plus usual luggage. And the road to the airport uses a toll bridge - unless things have changed, taxis have a go-box which automatically pays the toll and the cost will be added to the fare shown on the meter. It's not a con., and HK taxi drivers are honest) Like I said, mebbe someone can come up with a worthwhile tour-transfer - if not, research the sights and (cheap) public transportation. English is very widely spoken, and signs (transportation, street names, ATM instructions, menus etc etc are in English. Super-interesting place, lovely people - you might regret not giving yourselves a day or two more. Enjoy JB 🙂

I would suggest you check out Tours By Locals for Hong Kong https://www.toursbylocals.com/Hong-Kong-Tours and contact one (or more) of the guides who specializes in full day shore excursions in a private vehicle and tell them what you want. I'm confidant they will customize their tour to meet your needs.
cruisingaussies Posted February 8 #4 Share Posted February 8 Is anyone able to recommend a transfer service from the cruise terminal to a hotel near the airport? For four people. Thanks for any info.
alwayscruisetime Posted February 9 #5 Share Posted February 9 We ended our cruise last month in Hong Kong at 7AM with a 10:45 PM flight home and were very pleased with SF Express, an airport baggage check-in and delivery service. Our cruise line apparently was unaware that they would be right there at the port, but we passed their representatives as we were headed to the taxi line. They took our bags from us, stored them at the airport for the day, and we jumped on a city bus (the SF Express representative showed us how to find it) and explored the day on our own. We purchased Octopus cards which made boarding public transportation easy. You have to put a deposit down on the card, and then have what's left refunded to you at the end of the day, but we had plenty of time so that wasn't a problem. Agreed with the poster above who said that it's the type of place you want to have the time to spend when something interests you. We traveled using public transportation - trains and buses, and the cost was minimal. We enjoyed the flower and bird markets, which are sort of off the beaten path, and were glad we had the freedom to stay as long as we wanted. At the end of our day, we took the train to the airport, where the SF Express counter was large and retrieving our luggage was quick and easy. HIGHLY recommend!

Can I ask how much it cost for SF express? I wonder if you can book them upfront as I’d hate to have not booked a tour and be left with all of the suitcases and nowhere to go. alwayscruisetime Posted May 4 #8 Share Posted May 4 I looked back at my charge card to see what we spent (we had 3 large checked bags, 2 carry-on wheeled bags, plus one backpack, I believe - possibly 2 backpacks) and it was $80 - and would have been a bargain at twice the price, for the hassle it saved us! They took the bags from us between the ship and the taxi/bus line, so we didn't have to carry anything with us as we toured the city. There's also a time component - whatever the "standard" time for them to keep the bags was (6 or 8 hours?) we went longer by several hours, so that $80 included extra for the extra time. Our alternative was taking a taxi to the airport to store the luggage ourselves, then getting transportation back to the city. By using SF Express we cut out those travel costs, as the SF Express representative personally walked us to the buses, spoke to the driver, and made sure we got on the right bus going where we wanted to sight-see. Definitely worth researching online, but I can't imagine they wouldn't be able to accommodate you if you just showed up, as that's how we did it (not knowing in advance). That's a really great tip to know about for spending the day exploring Hong Kong without luggage in tow. $80 does sound more than reasonable for the convenience and peace of mind it provides. Another option which might be worth considering, is to use the advance check-in facilty at Hong Kong Station in town . Depending on your airline, some allow check-in from around 12 (or even more) hours ahead. We used it one time, but as it was pre-pandemic I looked just now and it is still available. Go to the hongkongairport.com website and click on DEPARTURES for info on the various early check-in locations within the city. If you can use this option you will already be checked in when you arrive at the airport.
