Cincy2Antarctica Posted February 7 #1 Share Posted February 7 Hi Everyone, I did a quick search on the board and couldn't find an answer specific to Antarctica. Have folks been able to use the service when down there? Looking to have it for more fun than business. Thank you in advance!
kaisatsu Posted February 7 #2 Share Posted February 7 If you’re visiting the peninsula, it will probably work fine as it’s not terribly far south and well within satellite range. In areas like the Ross Sea, it’s too far south for the normal satellite coverage, so shipboard internet and other satellite communication options are unavailable. (The same also applies to the far north around places like Svalbard.)
Cincy2Antarctica Posted February 7 Author #3 Share Posted February 7 Hey Kaisatsu, thank you! We are heading to the peninsula with Silver Seas here on 2/21, so I'll give it a try. Thanks mate!
Ziggy99 Posted March 2 #4 Share Posted March 2 Iridium covers the poles if it's satellite comms you're after. Its data service is limited and expensive. If the ship doesn't connect to it you can take your own device.
Ziggy99 Posted March 26 #5 Share Posted March 26 (edited) Looking into this further, while Starlink's coverage map didn't include Antarctica when I checked it, there is in fact Starlink internet available in the Antarctic. Quark offers basic internet free using it and faster internet for a fee. Basic eg for email, faster eg for streaming. Faster internet may be intermittant as there are no base stations on the continent and Starlink uses lasers to link satellites to base stations on the southern parts of other continents. I'm waiting to hear what Quark will charge for a faster connection. Edited March 26 by Ziggy99
