Dining Room Dessert Menu Question

Okay, I admit it...I am obviously a bit ignorant on some areas of fine dining. I notice on the dessert menu an assortment of cheeses are optional offerings. Is cheese considered an optional dessert? I have always considered it to fall into the appetizer/starter category. My only guess is it is customary to offer cheese in other countries? Whatever the case, I would appreciate an education on this somewhat trivial question. Thanks in advance.

In formal multi-course dinners, there is a cheese course. I believe it is after dessert, with a nice glass of port. By then, I have usually had enough of real dessert for the cheese course!

On our previous cruise, DH ordered the cheese and a glass of port as his dessert. They are supposed to be a good pairing and port is definitley a dessert wine. He has often ordered just the port for a dessert at home when he was too full from dinner.

He enjoyed it, but orered a "regular" dessert every other night.

Hubby has requested the cheese plate early since he likes blue cheese in his salad. No probl;em and the table generally shared the remainder as part of the appetiser/salad course.
