But not so close that you miss watching the ship leave. Ours was around 4 pm and our ship didn't pull away until around 6:30 pm.

 

Ours was at 3:30 and I think we left about 4:15-4:30. I've heard of some cruises where passengers were putting their lifejackets back in their cabin and the ship started moving. Guess it depends on a lot of factors.
