Best time for Greek cruise

What is the best time to take a cruise of Greek isles? Trying to figure out when to try and schedule. Looking to leave from Barcelona and end in Rome.

Ideally not in the hottest summer months when the heat can be unbearable and some of the outdoor monuments and sites close during the hottest hours of the day.  Maybe best to consider early or later in the shoulder seasons.

We absolutely loved visiting the Greek islands on our cruise back in the middle of May (May 16th to May 27th). This was the PERFECT time to especially see Santorini. There were only three ships in that day, but the two ships were smaller ships and left earlier than we did. I have heard lots of horror stories about the cable cars taking you up to Santorini where people were waiting 2 to 3 hours just to get on one. We waited 15 minutes, and the town of Santorini was not crowded at all! If we ever decide to go back to Santorini, we will definitely be going in May again, because the weather was beautiful, there were no crowds and no crazy waiting times!
