help with lisbon

Recommended Posts

Hi we have a very long port day in Lisbon (8 am to 9 pm) I am looking to arrange a private tour to Sintra.  There are operators with availability, so I'm in very good shape with that.  My only question is Lisbon easy to DIY or should I ask those providers to help with transportation around Lisbon.  When I did a Baltic cruise, everything was easy to DIY so I wanted to check.  It's a last minute cruise so I haven't researched Lisbon itself yet - are the major tour locations close or at least linked via public transportation?  And is there anything you'd recommend for a 5 year old (I know the aquarium/science museum are must sees) and I think she'd like the cable car.  Anything else you'd recommend?

Absolutely no need for that.  Sintra is the #1 Lisbon side trip due to it being so easy  to get there.  Only 30 minutes on the train .  .On exiting the train station in Sintra, use bus#434 outside to get you around Sintra. It is like a HOHO as it follows a circular route and stops at the main sights.

As your child is 5 years old, try googling something like "Lisbon for kids" (or similar ) for suggestions.

And the website mntioned above is an excellent source of reference for all things Lisbon as it is the Official Lisbon Tourist information website,.so if short on research  time, go to it first. as  that one and Tripadvisor may be all you need although here are many other websites to be found when you google eg  "Lisbon Tourist Information".

There are also many many past threads. Choose which to read from these

Just back from my first visit to Lisbon (and the missus' second).

IMO, the core part of Lisbon has reasonable walking distances (ie <30mins) from the terminal.  However, parts are pretty hilly, some sidewalks narrow particularly with crowds, and you may have to dodge street cars.

For places further out, such as to the Belem neighbourhood, you can take a street car, bus, or metro. Other than the touristy streetcars & funiculars, public transportation is fairly easy to use and dense.

We had two full days (two overnights) in Lisbon and we walked a bunch and also used a Navegante card loaded with 24hr transit passes which were also good for some of the (pricier) touristy streetcars, funicular, and IIRC the Santa Justa Lift.

What you call touristy streetcars is what the locals use for daily  transportation, and the tourist screw it for them 😉😁

Yeah, I do not doubt that at all.  The 28 route just looked packed not just at one of the terminuses where we were considering catching it but even when we came across it along it's route.  We ended up riding the 12 route instead which actually had space for locals to hop on and off.

Sintra is a fabulous place and easy to get to from Lisbon using the train. Once there just use the local bus or taxis to get to Pena Palace etc. You might find that after a day in Sintra yourself and your child might not have the energy for more sightseeing in Lisbon. If you do I suggest once back in Lisbon get an Uber to Castelo Sao Jorge. It's a lovely site to walk around and as it sits on a hill you get great views over the city. It's not far from the cruise port and a quick Uber ride back to the ship.

There are two cruise berths in Lisbon.

The main port berths are about a 20 minute walk from the old centre.

But some ships berth further down-stream, near the Belem Tower. That's something over 2 miles so needs a taxi or bus or hop-on bus (or train ?  trains pass there)

JB 🙂

That is because it is promoted on websites and in guidebooks as a "tourist must do", unlike all the other routes where it is perfectly possible to experience a vintage tram without it only having tourists aboard and being crowded..
