Some ships had third class passenger provide their own food, only a few first class cabins had en suite bathrooms while others had community bathrooms, and so forth. While I totally enjoy Cunard’s harkening back to the “glory days of transatlantic travel,” I wouldn’t want to actually be there.

As for QM2 being a “direct descendant” of Titanic, it’s complicated. Check out Chris Frame’s history of ocean liners for a description of the strange convoluted story. He also has You Tube videos that address some of the history.

Again the "lack of facilities" is to misunderstand how life was at the time. To have running hot water anywhere was a luxury. Even the best hotels did not feature "ensuite" bathrooms. Electricity was still a novelty and passengers were taken on tours of the kitchens to see Electric Ovens being used.

A lot of the Third Class passengers afforded Second Class but chose not to as they wanted to keep as much money as possible to help fund their new lives in the US.

Food was provided for all Classes.

Check out the books written by John Maxtone- Graham the best Beyond the Podium speaker I have ever had the privilege to hear and sadly missed. Although his books are now out of print second hand editions are readily available. The titles to look for are: The Only to Cross and Liners to the Sun plus a companion volume Olympic and Titanic.

All of this is fascinating, thank you for the useful insights.  Cunard to me offers the closest experience to how cruising used to be, although Celebrity is probably my favourite cruise line, given all the pros+cons.  But Cunard is up there, especially the QM2.  I did a cruise on the QM2 in July'24 so only a few months ago and it's fresh in my mind. Had a blast and it wasn't even expensive!  Celebrity Edge class of course is much higher rated, but Cunard delivered.

The Titanic provided food, but most liners required third class passengers to either provide their own food or to purchase food for the voyage: https://rmstitanic1912.weebly.com/third-class-dining.html#:~:text=In fact%2C most ocean liners, advantage of this%3B anyone would.
