samtig Posted April 3, 2006 #1 Share Posted April 3, 2006 Been reading about Sting Ray excursions. Am I correct that you can take excursions to Sting Ray City (deep water for snorkeling) or Sting Ray Sand Bar (waist deep water you can stand in)? If so, which excursions go to the sand bar? Thanks! TheWog Posted April 3, 2006 #2 Share Posted April 3, 2006 Sting Ray City is the sandbar. Most companies offer a snorkeling stop or two at other locations with deeper water as part of the tour.
drew sailbum Posted April 4, 2006 #3 Share Posted April 4, 2006 Sting Ray City is the sandbar. This is definitiely NOT the case. Stingray City is approximately 10-12ft deep. The Stingray Sandbar is shallow enough to stand. The two sites are approximately 2 miles apart and offer substantially different experiences. It is a gross oversimplification to assume that all snorkeliing trips go to the Sandbar. Most do, but some do not. Similarly one cannot assume that all stingray scuba dives go to the Stingray City site. The Sandbar slopes off rapidly, and near a set of coral heads just east of the Sandbar is a popular site for stingray scuba dives. How to know where your trip is going? Ask the tour operator directly. There is no other way to know for certain.
