sweet_successes Posted April 6, 2006 #1 Share Posted April 6, 2006 Hi everyone thanks for your best wishes - luckily i live in the only part of town that didn't flood in 1998. Sirens went off about 1 hour ago - helicopters and raaf jets flying over every 15 minutes. 3 schools have been set up and filled with evacuees. Town is totally cut off - centre of town is closed. North and South Katherine have been evacuated. Water is sitting on 18.77 m. Have attached 2 images of our town and one of the view from the school that I work at. love Rach PS - Maybe i need to get the snorkel kit out that I bought for my cruise:D
smurfette Posted April 6, 2006 #2 Share Posted April 6, 2006 Hi, How scary for you. What always amazes me isthat people will go and stand on a bridge or near a flood even when it is growing in height!!!!!!!
Tropicalshowers Posted April 6, 2006 #3 Share Posted April 6, 2006 Hi Rach, I hope you're still hanging in there! Our evening news said everyone had been evacuated, & that it was expected that the river would go above the 20 metre mark....hope all is still 'above water' Cheers

sweet_successes Posted April 7, 2006 Author #5 Share Posted April 7, 2006 Hi Guys Everything is fine. The Katherine River and the Katherine Gorge have gone down. There has been no rain yesterday or today. Some houses have been inundated with water as has the centre of town - however luckily it has only been knee deep in most places. Have spent the day working at the local high school (an evacutation centre) making lunch and dinner. There are about 600 people staying at the 2 evacuation centres. Road south was opened to light traffic this morning but the road to Darwin is likely to remain closed until at least Sunday. Haven't needed to paddle down the road yet - so still need my p & o cruise. have attached some humourous photos love Rach PS Thanks for the best wishes
