Confused about trip insurance...

Recommended Posts

last time we booked our cruise through a TA and purchased our own air. But we needed to contact her (within a certain time period) to cover both the air and cruise. And I can't remember which company we used.

This time we booked through a PVP FAR in advance (we booked 3/06 for a 4/07 sailing). Obviously, air isn't even available yet, so I'm confused about what the clause regarding the time frame was about.

I'm also curious as to a reasonably priced, yet reasonably inclusive, trip insurance carrier. Any recommendations, or is that against TOS as well?

Thanks.

I always estimate the cost of my airefare and calculate it in to the original policy. If it changes drastically, I just call the insurance company and inform them. Sometimes you have to give them something in writing if you are making major changes (i.e., if your travel dates change more than one day coming or going, you need to put it in writing so they can change that). I've never had a time limit on when a change could be made. As long as the policy is purchased in a timely manner if pre-existing conditions are a concern, adding air later isn't a problem. Just keep in mind if the air is a lot more than you calculate in the original policy, your premium may increase.

I recommend insuremytrip.com and I like Travelex Travel Lite policy on that site.

Whatever you do, make sure you get insurance. My wife and I were suppose to leave 12/2/05 with Holland America and didn't have insurance. Unfortunatly, a week before the trip, my wife was diagnosed with a brain tumor and were unable to take the trip. We lost the cost of the cruise, but Americawest was very understanding and gave us a credit that we are using for our cruise on 4/30 on the Miracle. My wife came through the surgery ok and her radiation and chemo and is looking forward to this trip. I learned to take the insurance the hardway.

You need to purchase insurance within "x' amount of days of making your initial deposit to have coverage for pre-existing conditions.

I do estimate airfare costs for my clients if we cannot get an accurate cost of air at the time of booking.

Just make sure you pick a primary coverage policy. Don't be fooled by the cheaper secondary coverage policies.

If for some reason, the final air costs are higher than you had anticipated, just call the insurance company and they will add the correct amount and charge you the difference.
