Better to day sail from St. Thomas or ferry to St. John and sightsee?

Recommended Posts

We have a group of 20 going on the Carnival Destiny May 7, 2006. We are trying to choose shore excursions, we would rather do them on our own than through the cruiseline. We have looked into the Independence Day Sail, out of St. Thomas, they will add a few sail boats to accommodate us. Has anyone used them? The other option we have talked about is to take a ferry to St. John and explore the island and then do the sailing in Barbados. Is it worth it to rent a car on St. John or would taking a taxi be easier? How good is the sailing out of St. Thomas and does anyone have another day sail company they can reccommend? I e-mailed two others but never heard back.
