People Watching

Recommended Posts

Don't you love just sitting and watching the world go by? Sitting on a park bench, waiting for a taxi, seeing some brave souls as they strut across the pool deck?

Can you recall the most 'interesting' person you ever saw on a cruise?

On MOS a few weeks ago, we saw a very petite nice old lady probably in her 80s. She had long hair passed her shoulders (brown not grey) with short bangs in front and red lipstick. Now she may not have been dressed weird or act strange but I tell you, all I could think of everytime I saw her was the old Rose from Titanic. Before we started cruising I had what I called 'Titanic syndrome' where I thought surely we'd sink. ;)

So I told my husband, I wonder if we'll see her standing on the rail late one night, tossing her blue diamond into the water? LOL

Excuse me while I jump in after it.... :p

So humor us and post about your experience

There was a group of well dressed african-americans on my last cruise -- beautiful suits with exquisite embroidery. But the guy that took the cake was their "ring leader" (so to speak) -- he had these long suits (almost with tails!) that were in shades of purple, teal green, mustard, etc. And each suit had a matching fedora. And a matching cane. And a matching "beer stein"-type of cup with matching jewels set into it.

We couldn't wait to get to dinner each night just to see what he wore next! Plus, he was always about 10 minutes late for dinner, just so he could make an entrance each evening, I'm sure!

A while back, my best friend and I had a girls only cruise on the Paradise. When we checked in the embarkation crew member said, "Isn't it exciting cruising with Richard Simmons?!?" We just looked at each other and said, "Well, it should be interesting." Sure enough, while we were eating lunch, a group of five women of different ages and sizes were going through the salad bar line--all dressed in matching dalmation print vests, skirts, and floppy brimmed hats. They were "Cruise to Lose" rs that were crazy about Richard, and even took their picture presenting him with his own dalmation vest and matching hat. It was definitely a cruise of memorable characters.

The most memorable person I have ever seen was an adorable lady named Dorothy. She was probably in her 70s and was always up dancing, leading the conga line in Sloppy Joes, flirting and having a grand time all by herself. Her daughter was on the cruise and told us her mom had been cruising alone and bugging them to go so she finally joined her. She could not stop smiling at what a great time her mom was having and how she was the life of the party. She even wore one of those coverups that has the bikini body on it.

I want to be Dorothy when I grow up..

On our repositioning cruise on the Vision in September we met Bill who is 92 years old. He was alone on that cruise. He got around real good. He said he really liked cruising and had booked a cruise to Hawaii. We met him again on the Vision for the Mexican Riviera in Feb. That was his 40th cruise on the Vision. He said he could not go to Hawaii because he had pneumonia. Great guy. He also had his lady friend with him on this cruise. She was in the 60s and he said he was robbing the cradle.

On my very first cruise, a 4-day, there was this little elderly lady escorted by the captain to his table. She walked well with assistance and had her silver hair all pulled up and her makeup done, probably in the spa (she was flawless). She was wearing a sequin tube top with a long pink ball gown skirt. Yes, midriff showing and all. People stood up and applauded when she walked in. We asked the waiter what that was all about. Here she was, in all her finery, on a cruise ship, celebrating her ONE HUNDRED AND SECOND BIRTHDAY! At first, I thought she was only like, 75. Even when I retell the story, I forget she was as old as she was. But I just looked back at my scrapbook, she was 102. Amazing.

If I'm able to cruise when I'm 102, I'll wear a little sequin tube top and eat with the captain, too!

I love people watching! Cheapest entertainment anywhere. :D

On one cruise this guy must of had a new and improved "dolly" cause he paraded her around at the solarium everyday showing her off in a new bikini. He would have her pose here and there for pictures all the while making sure everyone one was watching. After the second or third day I just kept reading my book.

One woman I remember had the weirdest fingernails I have ever seen. She was Jamacian and had a few really long nails, maybe 6 to 8 inches, on each hand. The other nails were normal length. The long ones were kinda curled. It was gross! It was hard not to stare.

I loved the time when we were all running on the treadmills in the gym overlooking the deck below us outside and this man was walking behind his extremely overweight wife, carrying her oxygen tank that was hooked up to her nose as she walked very slowly eating BOTH of her giant ice cream cones....ONE IN EACH HAND!!!! You had to see it to believe it!!!!!!!!
