howsthis Posted April 16, 2006 #1 Share Posted April 16, 2006 Just wondering what Ouvea is like, I see a lot about Noumea, Vila, Isle of Pines etc but am curious about what there is at Ouvea.

jessica3152 Posted April 17, 2006 #3 Share Posted April 17, 2006 Beautiful sandy beach, no snorkelling. It is about a 20 minute walk from the tender wharf to the beach or you can go in a local car for about $3. The locals do not speak much English but are very friendly. The kids are delightful. There is a small local market selling a few drinks and hiring out Hobie Cats etc. It is not like Mystery Island where the locals are very used to the cruise visitors. First visit to Ouvea was only last year.

mummsie Posted April 17, 2006 #5 Share Posted April 17, 2006 its Paradise on Earth. Just be careful of the prohibited area on the way to the swimming area. Its a sacred area for the locals and they ask that people respect this and not go swimming. A lot of people didn't take any notice and swum in front of the area which I though was very rude. The sand is silky soft. The market they set up doesn't sell too much other than a few bits and pieces of sarongs. They also sell coconut milk which is about the only thing you can buy to drink there. They had some food stalls set up but I wasn't that adventurous. It was the nicest place we saw on our last cruise. Mummsie:)
