Dawn - Canada/New England Cruise

We are thinking of booking the Dawn cruise out of New York this September for the Canada/New England itinerary. We will be flying from SC into NY and would like to stay a couple of nights before the cruise in New York City. I know that NCL offers pre-cruise hotel options but I am needing help to decide if we would be better to book this through NCL or on our own. We have only been to NY city once several years ago and do not know much about which hotels would be best for a pre-cruise stay - any suggestions with this one?

NCL offers the Sheraton and the Holiday Inn Manhattan has their choice hotels for NYC. Is the month of October any cheaper for hotels in NYC?
