platterb Posted May 1, 2006 #1 Share Posted May 1, 2006 We are seriously considering reserving rental cars at the various ports in Hawaii instead of booking excursions. We have been to Hawaii before and know our way around but our last trip was a land vacation instead of a cruise. Can someone give me an idea of the logistics involved in obtaining rental cars in the various ports? How close are the agencies to the cruise docking piers? Did you have to take a taxi to pickup the cars or were shuttles involved? How much time did it take? Any input will be greatly appreciated. beachchick Posted May 1, 2006 #2 Share Posted May 1, 2006 The rental car companies are at the airports. Most have shuttles at most ports to take you to the airport location. In Waikiki/Honolulu, some of the agencies have downtown locations. At Kona, Dollar is across the street from the tender pier at the King Kamehameha hotel. It's more expensive than renting at the airport, but Kona is the exception to rule because typically the piers are very close to the airports. Not so at Kona. The airport is a good 30 minutes away, and I would rather pay more than waste so much of my 1 day in getting to and from the airport. Maui (both sides), Hilo, and Kauai, it's maybe 10 minutes from the pier to the airport car rental locations. beachchick
