Hi! Budget Queen and other Alaska experts

We are interested in Whale Watching and Wildlife tour at Icy Straits Point on June 1. Have tried Floyd's Icy Strait Highliner Enterprising Services and they are booked.

Are there other good independent tour operators that we can approach?

Pls provide link and share experience.

Many thanks

We used Glacier Wind Charters when we were in Icy Straight on June 30th 2 years ago. Here's their website: http://www.g-wind.com/

It was a really great experience. It's a guy and his wife who live in North Pole Alaska. But they have a summer home in Icy Straight. They're both teachers and have the summer off. So they do tours on their boat in the summer. They were both really nice people. They provided us with a lovely lunch on the boat and lots of drinks and snacks.

We actually chartered the boat with another couple we recruited on these boards for the day. It was a fishing excursion. And we caught lots of fish. Both Salmon and Halibut. I caught a 45 lb. Halibut. Shawn, the captain, took care of cleaning it and having 30 lbs. of Halibut and Salmon (15 lbs. of each) shipped home for us.

This all day tour cost the same per person as a half day tour with the cruiseline cost and we got to fish for both kinds of fish where the cruiseline only offered Salmon fishing. Plus, we got the nice lunch included as well. And they even gave us an Alaskan beer to drink while we were settling up our bill at the end of the day.

But the real highlight of our fishing trip was the whales. While we were fishing, whales started jumping out of the water and breaching. They were rolling from side to side. There was a mother and her baby jumping out of the water simultaneously. It was incredible. We pulled the poles in and spent the rest of the afternoon whale watching. So I would highly recommend Icy Straight for whale watching. We got a much better show than we did on Captain Larry's in Juneau (although it was still a good tour). And I highly recommend this couple for tours in Icy Straights.

If Glacier Wind Charters is booked up, maybe they can make a recommendation on someone else in Icy Straights that you can contact for an independent tour.

Enjoy your Alaska cruise. It's coming up soon.
