Tip question, haven't cruised in two years

fierysand -- so it's more a personal gratification to you? ........ It's almost like a security blanket for you to give it to them that way?

Ash, I believe that some folks tip in person because it makes them feel better (superior?) to personally hand over the tip - like "Look how wonderful I am?" Just an ego booster.:p

My only question is did they know that this was the way you chose to do it?

The crew does know. They are given a list of which passengers have left their auto tips in place, and which ones removed them.

Hey Dood. You know that you and I are usually on the same page on most issues; however, that was COLD, man!:( I'm sure it doesn't matter a whit to you what I think, but your creditability just dropped a few notches with me. What a shame to be so heartless.

Ashkarita-I did say to my room steward(Roland) and his assistant (Tiaana) that I prefer to give cash than use the S&S for tips and mentioned it to other crew if it came up in conversation. I simply said that I preferred to tip during the cruise than to wait until the end. My waiter (Parm) and his assistant (Julie) also knew that I was giving them cash in lieu of using the S&S. No one said that they would rather I tip on the S&S. I also tipped other crew besides those on the "recommended" list. There was no ill intent on my part, I simply wanted the crew to get the tip and not the ship.

Before I cruised a close friend who works on a ship told me it worked better this way and that is what most crew preferred. Now, my friend does not work for Carnival so his opinion is based on the line he works for. Also, having been a server before, I always appreciated my support staff and contributed accordingly so I assumed it would work this way on the ship. That being said, if its true that the CREW on the Carnival prefer the S&S then I would use this method. I simply used cash as I thought that is what the staff preferred. If I thought that the staff would rather that I use the S&S than I would use this method. I guess I will do my research before my next cruise and will use whatever method that the crew prefers!

Off topic- I noticed that you have an upcoming cruise on the Valor and that you also cruised on the Victory. I cruised on the Valor last November and had a GREAT time! I was thinking of doing the Victory cruise as a back to back with the Freedom in November. How did you like your Victory cruise? It would be great if you could post your comparisons of both ships when you return. Thanks in advance.

To the rest of you negative posters- LIGHTEN UP!!!! I am a happy, outgoing and generous person and am quite amused by your reations.:p I think that there must be some confusion. I DO NOT remove the auto tipping from the drinks, I ONLY removed the autotipping of the recommended $30 per day and gave the cash and then some to the staff as I wanted to make sure that the staff received it and not the ship. I do not need to feel supieror by tipping with cash or for self gratification as you put it, I only though it was what the staff preferred! I am more than happy to use the S&S if that is what they prefer. I find it funny that so many people only see the negative of things when no ill intent was intended!!!

Hi Cotton!!

You know the dood man...he is just being the dood man in his usual funny sarcastic way. Over the top as usual, but still "the dood". Always LOL!

This thread had brought up an interesting question though.... if the tips are given in cash to the cabin steward, what are the odds that this "cash" never gets filtered down to his cleaning assistant. I mean, I wonder if the lower guys on the totem pole ever get left out, if someone hands the main cabin steward "cash"???

And I wonder if this was another reason they went to the automated system, to protect the cleaning assistants?? Just a thought..

I also think about the number of folks (of all ages, but possibly the younger college set) who used to "walk the ticket".

Personally, I wish they would just add it to the price of the cruise and be done with it. I guess automatic tipping is the closest thing to that.

Good thing he didn't say homeless in Mississippi then, he would have dropped a lot further. ;)

I trust things are going well for you on that front?

Whew, dood dodged the "big one" for sure !! LOL

Hubby drove down last month and things are still "shocking" and unbelievable. Downtown Gulfport just looked like a ghost town. Man, I wish they could get a cruise ship to commit to that area to help revitalize it.

Sorry Cotton, I was being sarcastic to the comment about whether tips get distributed properly - the poster's reply "Not my problem" so I was just being a little dramatic, I have taken my meds and toned down!

...and I did think of Cotton when I mentioned the homeless - but it was dood sarcasm...

...more meds, more med, maybe a cruise, and some booze, and some time up on the f-deck.

Thanks for the scolding!

Thanks for not taking what I said the wrong way! And that's good, I was hoping you mentioned it and they weren't banking on two sets!

Yes I cannot WAIT until the Valor cruise! I'll be sure to post a review and add in the comparisons for you when I get back! I've heard from SO many people that they loved the Valor -- I'm so excited!

You'll have a GREAT time and you can even do some topless suntanning on the adult deck above the courts! You always get fantastic drink service on this deck!!:p Looking forward to your reviews when you get back.

Have fun and happy cruising!

I don't understand why you say you want the crew to get the tip & not the ship.

You do realize that when you give them cash they do not get to keep it all.

The recommended tipping is $10.00 a day.

Different lines do it different ways.

On Carnival only, if tips are left on the S&S they go to the wait team and room steward of that pax. if the pax also adds cash during or at the end they get to keep that.

If you remove the tips from the S&S two bad things happen.

1. The crew in question is informed that the tips have been removed from the S&S. [This is bad because the crew and we know that 92% of those who take the tip off their S&S, "to pay in cash." DO NOT TIP AT ALL]

I wouldn't want to be thought of that way all week.

2. The crew in question must explain what they did or didn't do wrong to have their tip removed plus they must cough up any cash they received and it goes into the ships tip pool. Lying means their job.

The ship does not keep 10 or 20%, the S&S tip money is credited to the crewmember's on board account as soon as it clears.

Lastly auto-tipping came into being because so many were stiffing all. The dining rooms on the last night were becoming ghostly. I mean way less than half full. The cheap screws would rather not eat than part with a well squeezed penny.

Leave the tips on the S&S.

this thread totally reminds me of that one episode of Seinfeld where George gets caught taking his tip out of a tip jar because the guy didnt see him put the tip in. anyone remember that. He got busted because he wanted the guy to actually see him put the tip in. Too funny!

I think some people are clearly missing my point. Stop getting your knickers in a knot by reading more into it than how it was!

I only wanted to make sure that the people who looked after me received the tips. I was under the impression that the crew preferred this! It was $30 per day as I was travelling with my two children. This was my FIRST Carnival cruise and I had no idea that the Fantanstic crew that looked after me preferred that the tips were left on the S&S. I am NOT cheap, I tip very well and I do not need anyone to see what I gave them, I simply gave cash as I thought that they preferred this! Stop making assumptions that have nothing to do with fact! Honest mistake, oh gods of the CC board!:p Again, lighten up, cruise and be happy! The glass is half full not empty!

Rest easy, my next Carnival Cruise, all tips will be on the S&S and the only cash that I hand over will be to the Casino!;) Or should that be on the S&S too?

Happy Cruising.................Sandie

Thx for asking. My son built me a small house on his property on Back Bay Biloxi. I moved into it a few weeks ago. Not 'home', but sure better than the FEMA trailer. My beachfront empty LOT is going on the market soon. I just can't bring myself to rebuild there.

Ok, we're cool, Dood. I just don't think you have any idea how it hit me when I saw that...after Katrina had me living in a FEMA trailer for eight months.

Hey, meds are a good thing!:)

I believe there are pros and cons to the tip on the S&S. I think it is more convenient for the passenger and it gives a little something to the others that were getting forgotten. On the other hand, I have also seen that the service has gone down hill. People assume that they are already getting a tip so they just "do the job". Before the new system they really worked to try and get the best tip they could out of you.

Donnica,

I've cruised since the 70's when envelopes were passed out the last evening and there was no other food venue but the dining room. Cruised thru the rise in cruise popularity, the advent of multiple dining options and the decline in tipping. A massive decline as others on these boardas will attest.

Your opinion is auto-tips have caused service to decline.

My opinion is different. I see some service bumps caused by the explosion of new cruiseships and the need for thousands more service personell. Training is ongoing and some don't belong in the service industry. Those problems are not caused by auto-tips but by millions of more cruisers each year.

As far as service by the more experienced crew, I think they know they'll get the recommended amount and now work for the over tips.

A couple of years ago and on a Carnival ship, no less, we received the best service by our waitteam that I've ever received including many 4 and 5 star land restaurants that I've had the good fortune to enjoy.

That team got $100 plus the auto-tips.

The cruise industry might now be serving more people per year than all the worlds 3, 4, and 5 star restaurants combined. And finding good trainable help is a constant problem for all of them too. Just size, not auto-tips IMHO.

I'm sorry if you misunderstood me. I did not mean to sound like I was putting you down for taking your tips off your S&S card. Sometimes it is hard to tell someones tone when writing, and I know I am not a good writer.

Until I came to this board I did not understand just how the tips worked. On my first cruise I left my tips on my S&S card & also left cash tips. I assumed the extra cash tip was given to the person I intended it for. I soon found out that was not the case.

In the future I will continue to leave my tips on my S&S card,( unless something outrages were to happen), but I am seriously thinking about bringing other items than cash to tip with.

No need to apologize! I merely used your post to make a point that I only did what I believed worked better for the staff. I felt that your post was the easiest one to use to get my point accross. My comments were meant to clarify and to lighten up the mood of some of the previous posters. I didn't mean to direct my comments to you but after re-reading my post I can see this is what I did. :o I apologize! Your post was actually very well written and not offensive in any way!

Everyone- I actually find some of the posters reactions on this thread quite humorous! Rather than simply explain why its better to leave the tips on your S&S than to give cash they lash out in attack mode. All that negative energy is unhealthy. You can learn alot about a person by their reactions. I find it funny that they only read what they want to see. I clearly stated my confusion regarding the pooling of tips but the only thing these posters focused on was the fact I paid cash and removed my tips from the S&S and then let their imaginations make false assumptions. Some interesting stuff here! Mrdood gave me the most laughs though as he was the biggest loudmouth and most imaginative. Life is too short to be this grumpy!!! Thanks for the laughs!:D

To the positive posters- The advice about leaving the tips on the S&S and the explanations given to the benefit of doing so were very much appreciated! Thanks to all the posters who contributed positive advice!

Also, prior to boarding the Valor, I had just disembarked from the Radiance with my family and we had such a great time and wanted to cruise for another week. So we hopped a cab to where the Valor was docked, were lucky enough to get a cabin and boarded the Valor to enjoy another week of cruising. The tipping system on the Valor was very different than on the Radiance. On the Radiance you only give cash. They do add the tips to the S&S on the Radiance (1st cruise ever) and as this was my first cruise on a Carnival ship (only 2nd cruise for my family) I was unaware that the tipping policies would be different. I thought that the advice given to me regarding tipping on the Radiance would also apply to the Valor. Obviously I was mistaken. I will definately leave the tips on the S&S for my next cruise aboard Carnival.

I travel alot but I'm a newbie to cruising so I'm sure I'll learn along the way. Afterall, you can't fix what you don't know is broken!;)

Thanks for all the advice and....................don't worry.............be happy! :) Remember it takes more muscles to frown than to smile.
