Okay, strange question about saving chairs

I am a first time cruiser, so be gentle. I hear a lot on these boards about how rude people rise at the crack of dawn to save lounge chairs on deck. I hear they put books shoes, towels etc, on them. So forgive me here, what happens if you just remove the item and take the chair somewhere else. What is the big deal? I mean, if a person is obviously there using it, and has a bag and such and is just in the pool or something, that's different. But if there is just a shoe, or a towel on it, and you have watched for a while, and it is obviouslly a saved chair, why not just remove the item and snag the chair? I am just wondering. I am cruising w/ my small kids and retired parents, and if we don't have a place to sit and enjoy the sailing days because of this nonsense, I can very easily see myself doing this. So whadda ya think? Anyone tried this? No flames please, just trying to get an idea of these things.;)

And while we're on the topic, I will be going with a group of 12 from age 6 to 75. If we wanted to have a place for everyone to check in and hang out awhile, how do we find a place with enough chairs if we don't save at least a few. Maybe 6 or 8 needed but our group will come and go during the day. I an sure that someone will be there most of the time except for maybe lunch.

I might get flamed for this, but I have no problem moving something off a chair that has been sitting with no one in it for well over an hour. Once I did have a confrontation with someone, I had taken a book off and sat it on the deck. The chair had been empty for a couple of hours and I had been stuck sitting in a straight backed chair at a table and wanted some sun. When the guy came back I pretended not to know what he was talking about. OK that was dishonest, but I'm a chicken and didn't want a fight. I only wanted a place in the sun for awhile.

I do snag the chair if it's obvious that it's just being saved. I only want to lay out for a couple of hours. If the "owner" comes back and wants to make their claim, I'll gladly give it up. But it hasn't happened yet! :D

There are signs posted that say "no saving chairs".... which means "no saving chairs"... if someone has blatently done that, and there were no available chairs, why not remove their items (especially if it is something lame like one shoe!!). The chairs should be used by people that are THERE, USING them at the time (of course except when they are in the pool, etc.). There were many times we left the pool to go and do other things, knowing we would be coming back later, but also accepting that we had to give up our chairs at that time... and take our luck at getting others when we returned... it's all about courtesy.

Tropicalconcrete, it sounds like you guys will probably only have 6-8 people there at any given time... so why not just use the 6-8 chairs? It really disturbed me when a group would have a dozen chairs and throughout the day, we may have seen 6 people using them... the chairs are scarce enough as it is and should be reserved for those using them. I would definitely say that if a chair is vacant for an hour, it's up for grabs. Just MHO :D

If you remove the book and completely move the chair to another area, how would the "saver" even know who took the chair anyway! LOL! I know everyone wants a place to sit, it just seems unfair to save them. I mean, I guess I think everyone should have to "take their chances" know what I mean? Easy now, no flames, let's not get our under-drawers in a bunch over something as silly as this. :D I'm still looking for opinions. lol! Goincrusin, you are exaxtly right. It IS about courtesy, that's why I'm amazed so much of it (saving) seems to be going on, and allowed.

Maybe I'm just not picky about where I lay, but I've never had a problem getting a pair of chairs for DH and myself. This has been at different times of the day, different weather conditions. Okay, so they're not right in front of the pool, but we have snagged chairs right in front of the stage without any problem. I'm curious to know what you guys consider to be the prime real estate for deck chairs where chair saving is a problem. Or have I just been really lucky??

On our cruise, after 11am, there were no chairs available (other than those that were "saved"... so you may have just been lucky. We really didn't care where we were, as long as we had a chair.... after 4 we preferred to be in front of the band... and we never had any trouble later in the day... it was the prime "sunning" time where we encountered problems...

I was too lazy to move the chair, besides I liked where it was so I just moved the book off of it :)

Terri,

I'd love to see someone come here and *defend* the practice of saving chairs for hours on end. Bring it on. What part of the sign that reads "No Chair Saving" didn't they get? Perhaps it needs to be posted in Braille as well?

Speaking of Braille, what rocket scientist put the Braille tabs on the ATM in the DRVE-THROUGH? What is up with *that* ?

I for one have *zero* problem with taking a chair that has been "saved" for an inordinate amount of time. And if someone is stupid enough to abandon a Carnival towel, all the better. Not only are they going to lose their chair, but someone is going to get whacked for $22 for losing the towel. ;) You want your book or flip-flops back? Check the lost-and-found at the Purser's Desk.

This topic is like *any* about, oh let's just say, kids. NOBODY admits to bringing the spawn-of-satan hellions aboard ship, but they're still there. Whose kids are they anyway?

Tef, that is pretty funny.... I never quite understood the point of that.

Hey, if they happen to be reading a good book... I might take the book too  Now, if they would only leave a half dressed cabana boy behind

Chair saving?....what a pain!....I think it was on the Pride that I was so proud of Carnival.......They had the security guys taking towels off chairs left and right.....I actually snagged a chair as one did...the guy sitting there before came back about an hour later and said "hey, these were our chairs and where's our stuff"..........I said, I don't know.....ask the security guy there.....I think there's a rule about not saving chairs...(I said as I reached for another beer).....NOW, the opposite happened to me too....I actually just went to the restroom for like 5 minutes and a guy was in my chair and my stuff thrown on the deck....I was PISSED>....I said, HEY.you're in my chair.....I just went to the restroom FTLOG....he quickly moved and said oh.....it looked like it was vacant for a long time.......yeah, right......Don't get me started......there, I feel better!

:D This may be a weird question, but oh well. Can my husband and I bring chairs with us??? We have some camping chairs that fold up small enough to fit in our big suitcase. I have no shame and it wouldn't bother me to bring them? Is this allowed?

Since I wouldn't want to provoke anyone, I'd simply find an attendant and explain that the chair had been vacant for xxx hours and ask to have the items removed. Then if accused of moving the said items, I could say that I didn't do it with a clear conscience. :p

TEF

the hell with Lost and Found , they want their book or flip flop they can check Davy Jones Locker *LOL*

good one about brailee ATM *LOL*

If i have been circleing the deck for a considerable amount of time and see that a chair is definately being saved and the owner of the item is no where to be found ( in the pool, just going to the bathroom or getting a drink) I have no problem taking it off and placing it on the deck.

NO I WOULD NOT THROW IT OVERBOARD *LOL* JUST KIDDING!!!

I think i worded that last post wrong

I meant to say that if the person saving the chair was not just in pool, or going to the bathroom or getting a drink , i would have no problem moving it and taking the chair.

If you are in the lounge playing Bingo, or in the dining room having lunch, and your flip flop is sitting on the deck chair.

so long and see ya flip flop!!!!!

I am so lucky when this type of issue comes up. My husband is 6'6" and built like a linebacker. In fact, we live near Dallas and went to a special "cowboys roundup" pregame party. All of the cowboys were there so you got to meet them in person. By the way, we won admission to this through a local radio station. Anyway, we got so tired of everyone asking my husband if he was Daryl Johnson, "the moose" that he started saying yes and signing autographs. We still laugh about that to this day. Needless to say, my husband is huge and no one seems to bother us when we snag a chair. He makes sure the chair has been empty for some time and is being saved. Then he tosses their stuff and sits down. No one has approached us yet. I guess it pays to marry a big "moose" of a man.

I don't really care to get more sun so capturing a lounge chair is no big deal. But I did see something that was pretty humorous.

This young couple came out about 10:30 and wasn't a chair that was available. Either with some item on it or someone in one. Well they sat around in the sun in one of the straight backed chairs for about 45 minutes. The guy got up went over to two chairs with stuff on them that had been that way for over an hour. We were sitting under the upper deck area and saw when a woman came out at about 9 and put stuff on 4 chairs and disappeared.

He took the stuff off of two chairs and put them on on chair. Two other ladies that were watching them, went over and took the stuff off of the other two chairs and put everything that was on the 4 chairs on one straight back chair. Put the chair behind all the lounge chairs and obviously we all had to wait to see what would happen.

Well along comes these two couples at about 12:30 looking for their 'saved' chairs. When they saw their stuff on the chair one of the women went balistic. Problem was she accused someone that had nothing to do with it for taking their chairs.

The guy spoke up and said he had moved their stuff to a chair. Words flew back and forth until a secruity guard came and surprise, surprise, almost everyone that was around sunning said that the chairs had been vacant for hours.

The argument came down to 'someone' stacking their stuff on a chair which they thought was rude! Go figure.

Not through. Next day they did it again and then one of them went around to the other side and sat in chair and waited for someone to do it again. Sure enough someone did and evidently they had communication with a walkie talkie and they came running out in about 2 minutes to claim their chairs.

What is it about these chairs that causes people to get dumbed down and stupid! The crazy part is that there were chairs on upper decks that were not being used. But you know the same people did the same thing in the theater.

They rushed in and droped something on the seat or put a drink on the table and went back to the Casino.

Sorry it was so long but really I haven't found too many people doing that kind of ignorant stuff. I bet these same types don't leave any tips, complain about everything and complain that they had a bad cruise.

Nuf I quit now. Out of breath!:D

OK, now I won't feel so bad about moving stuff. On our last cruise, I NEVER got a lounge chair, not ONCE!!! So beware fellow Elation cruisers, the flip-flop will be GONE!!

Leaving 7/11-can't wait!!!!

Sailed on the Carnival Victory May 2-9 and there was never a problem finding a lounge chair anytime during the week. Most days there were even additional stacks of chairs that were not touched. This was a sold out cruise, and with the exception of one and a half cloudy days, we had sun all day every day.

DJK- No, i see nothing wrong with taking the stuff off and moving the chair, but good luck finding a place to MOVE the chair to. I was on the Triumph and there wasn't any extra space anywhere. So you'd have to make do with moving the stuff and hoping. I would have had no problem not HAVING a chair at all and just laying on my towel on the deck, but there's just no deck space extra, at least on the Triumph.

Me being a Gamecock I never thought I would agree with a LSU Tiger but in this case I do. I was just on the Glory and yes people were saving chairs but the ones that were saved were near the Lido Deck pool. There were plenty of chairs and showers throughout decks 9 - 11. Granted they may have not been near the pools but so what? I would like to see Carnival be a bit more aggressive in preventing this. Keep in mind this problem exists on RC as well. We just need to accept this as a part of cruising.

I have an idea and would like your opinion about it.

If I am in a chair and need to leave it for a few minutes (let say max 30 minutes if I want to go grab a burger or ice cream). What about if I leave a sticky note on it saying that I will be back shortly (within 30 minutes) and ALSO putting the time on it. Something like that:

I NEED A BURGER, WILL BE BACK IN LESS THAN 30 MINUTES (2:30 PM).

Obviously, letting people know the exact time is required. If not, people could leave such a note on a chair for a full day, saving it this way. What do you think of my idea?
