Port of Vigo

Please could anyone tell me what they did at this port.My DH wants to do a trip to Santigo de Compostela and as the cruise line excursions to this place are expensive I thought I would arrange some private transport myself but I am not having very much luck.I could just get a taxi from the port,but how available are the taxis in Vigo.I would hate to rely on this method and end up with no taxi and then it will be too late, and we will have to remain in Vigo itself.Any info would be greatly appreciated.Many thanks in advance to anyone that responds.

We were in Vigo last year as one of the port after a TA cruise on RCL's Jewel of the Seas. We ended up taking a cruise sponsored tour to a fortified town on the border between Spain and Valenca do Minho, Portugal. The town had nice walls but other than that it was sort of bust. They did also take us to a fort, El Castro Mount, that overlooks the Vigo harbor where we were able to get some good pictures of the city, harbor and our ship. It was a big bus trip with lots of time spent getting on and off. I wouldn't recommend it unless you can't find anything else. It did allow time to then visit the downtown area of Vigo but since it was pouring rain when we got back to the ship we elected not to do that.

I took the ship's tour to Santiago de Campostela last summer, and found it to be worth the money because of the guide's commentary, both on the bus to and from, and at Santiago itself. I learned a lot more than I would have if I had done it on my own. I can't remember whether or not there were taxis readily available in Vigo. However, I seem to recall that some folks from our ship took a train to Santiago on their own -- don't have any details, though.

The dock that our ship, Sea Princess, used, was right at downtown, so you didn't need to go "into Vigo". I couldn't remember about the taxis, so checked with my husband -- he said they were lined up right there at the ship. Plenty of them.

I don't know if this summer I would do Galicia on my own.

 

You may have read in the news that all summer long forest fires and wildfires have been raging throughout the region of Galicia, getting close to the cities, although not affecting the cities.

 

The fires are under control now, but you may be faced with roadblocks, detours, extra traffic, etc.

 

Because of this situation, right now I would feel more comfortable taking the ship's tour, so there is a guarantee that I wouldn't miss the ship if the tour got stuck in traffic or was detoured.

We visited Vigo in 2003 when very few C.C. members had ever docked there. I remember asking the same quesiton as yourself and not receiving an answer. When we arrived at the dock, another C.C. couple and ourselves took a taxi - they were very easy to find - and we were driven to Santiago which is about a 80-90 minute ride on a freeway. We arranged for the taxi driver to return to pick us up about 3 hours or so later.

 

Sanitago is a lovely city. Besides the religious significance of the city, it is also a University town and there is a lot to see. It has some wonderful eating places and interesting streets. We spent a wonderful time exploring this city before we were picked up right outside the Cathedral.

 

Our driver returned us to the ship via a great park with a terrific view of Vigo. We paid him at the dock when we returned and I think it cost us around 70Euros per couple, a lot cheaper than going with the ship's excursion. While we were in Santiago, we did see all the people from our ship.

 

We had thought of taking the train, but the timetable just didn't fit in with the ship and there was too big a risk of missing our departure time.

 

I hope this is of help. We found our taxi driver was able to understand us and speak English quite well.
