Are there any casual restaurants nearby within walking distance? Convenience store?

Yes, you can walk west over the 17th Street Causeway bridge there's a dozen or so casual restaurants to choose from

Also we are in the Tower. What are the chances of getting a view of the ships? Thanks

All you have to do is ask. I've always found the staff to be very accomodating. ;)

There is also a great little place over looking the water right on site if you don't feel like going offsite. Pelican Grill I think it is called. Had a guitar player taking requests while we ate and food was excellent.

I say your chances are very good. Just ask. There is a convenience store right across the street we stopped there before heading over to the ship.

We have stayed so many times at the Pier 66, the concierge knows our names. When we had our winter home in Fla., and drive down to the Pier 66, they would have the car washed and waxed for our return.:p Use the concierge and let them have your worries. Enjoy your cruise and Happy Sailings...Leslie Swiger:)
