big john1945 Posted June 26, 2006 #1 Share Posted June 26, 2006 Going on the July 29th eastern. It sounds like San Juan will be a waste of time. One member of our party has never been there, but it looks like everything of interest will be closed when we arrive. Any suggestions? We love St. Thomas, but are open for any advice. I love snorkeling and my wife loves the shops. Any word on Bob's Underwater adventure? Can you book this on your own? We've been to St. Martens once before, and would appreciate any suggestions. I usually avoid the ship's excursions because of the cost. Any special tips for the Triumph. This will be our 14th cruise. We love it.
kathy32259 Posted June 26, 2006 #2 Share Posted June 26, 2006 John - I have been on the Triumph Eastern twice. And on the Glory Eastern which included St. Thomas and St. Maarten. I am like your wife - not up for the water sports but love the shopping. In San Juan the first trip we just walked around OSJ, did a little shopping, then stopped in a great Mexican sports bar/restaurant and watched the Ohio State bowl game. It was January and got dark early. On the second trip in May we took the Bacardi Rum factory tour. I wasn't sure I would like it - but it was very informative and fun. They stay open for the ship excursions only and the Mojito's were wonderful. In St. Thomas, my DD and her BF took the catamaran snorkle tour and they loved it. This was a Carnival excursion - they said they would do it again. I stayed at the port and shopped all day in Havensight. When they returned from snorkeling - they changed and then we went across the street to the Shipwreck for sandwiches. (They have good food there) In St. Maarten - The first time we took the island tour - it was long and hot - no air cond. in the van  . This was not a carnival excursion. I didn't enjoy this so much. We took the water taxi across the harbor to downtown and I liked that much better! We went to a cute little casino there and did some shopping and then ate at one of the bar/restaurants on the beach. Friends of mine did a snorkel catamaran trip (Carnival) here and they really enjoyed that as well. I hope you enjoy the Triumph as much as I did. As you can see in my sig we are going btb on her at the end of the year. Then we are ready to try another ship and itin. After 14 cruises I am sure you can give me more pointers than I can give to you! If you have any specific questions about the ship let me know. If I don't know the answer, Big Duck will. :)
