Where to find the black sand beaches?

This is our first trip to Hawaii, booked on the POAM 7/8/06. Need help locating the black sand beaches. None of the ship excursions mention it. Which ones are recommended, and can I get there without a car rental? Any help would be appreciated.

We visited 2 on our trip on POAM in May, both require a car. At Hilo you go on past VNP about 25 miles and there is a nice beach with sea turtles. On Maui there is one just before you get to Hana on the Road to Hana. This was a beautiful beach.

I agree that the black sand beach not far from Hana is beautiful and also very striking.

That black sand beach not far from Hana is in Waianapanapa State Park. Such a GORGEOUS spot with many natural rock formations, arches and lava tubes.

Does anyone know the name of the beach SouthernGuy is referencing on the big Island?

The black sand beack he mentions on the island of Hawaii with the sea turtles is Punalu'u Black Sand Beach. See the photos in the link below.
