Best Bad Mistake Ever....

Bleach

Recommended Posts

Just got back from the Glory (7/8) and our trip home was an adventure. I made what had to be the biggest travel mistake in my life. We had booked our air travel through Carnival (ended up a better deal). We arrived at Orlando the day before and shuttled over to the cruise (awesome, review coming). The only thing I really looked at on the air e-tickets was the time. So we take the shuttle back to Orlando airport getting there about 50 minutes before flight time. I go to the self checkin and punch in my flight number... "this flight does not leave from Orlando airport....". Oh my God, we were supposed to go to Melborne for the return trip.

So in the middle of my panic attack, I call Delta to see if anything can be done. Then they tell me that my flight had been canceled and I had been reboot on a flight for the next day, as there were no other flights available. I assume that someone (Carnival, Delta) would have put us up for the night. I ask if there were any flights out of Orlando... "yes, but it leaves in 90 minutes I don't think you'll make it to Orlando in time". I explain that I was already in Orlando. So, we got on the flight and made it home at 90 minutes later that orignally scheduled...

Moral of the story, read, re-read you flight plans, we got lucky!

Nice suggestion but I ALWAYS read ALL my docs. My Lord... Your not in Kansas anymore but you could have ended up there by the sounds of your storey!

Heck, I don't know if you really should read everything... Your story proves that you shouldn't!!!

What a nice little surprise getting home earlier than your suppose to... the getting off the ship going home part is by far the worse part of the cruise.

I doubt I would miss the entire airport! However, something similar did happen to me after a cruise.

We were a group sailing out of San Juan. We all made our own air reservations, but about 15 of us were on a USAirways flight set to depart later in the afternoon.

After we disembarked, some of our group wanted to go straight to the airport. It would be a long wait there, but they thought maybe they could get an earlier flight.

Most of us wanted to see San Juan during the morning. We found a taxi driver and made a deal for him to take us around to see some sights and finally to the airport.

We got to the airport with plenty of time to check in for our flight. We were surprised that the check-in line was empty. The airline staff was surprised to see us and told us the flight had already left. Apparently, they changed the time to a much earlier departure while we were at sea. They said they notified Carnival of the change but of course we were never told of it.

I went to the Delta counter and a flight was leaving soon, and we could get home if we took that one. The agent said there was plenty of room on the plane but it would be more expensive and we told him we were not paying for it, so we went back to the USAirways counter.

There was some bickering about who was responsible - all we knew was that we were not responsible. Finally we were escorted onto the Delta plane and made it home just fine. I never did find out who paid the tab but it was not us!

Glad everything worked out for you! And you have a great story to go with it :D

I remember when we were flying home from Australia/New Zealand we arrived in Hawaii for transfer and found our flight didn't exist! They got us out 8 hours later, and we rented a car and drove around the island (we were exhausted and didn't appreciate the beauty like we would have under different circumstances).

But it's a story I still tell (as obvious from above LOL)

I suspect we all have airline stories to tell. Ours was on a cruise in Alaska (we live in Florida). Our TA made arrangements and all looked great on paper.

But, the flight from Tampa to Chicago was delayed, which put us on a different flight to Seattle, and we just did catch the last flight to Anchorage. All we showed up with was our carryons. Rest of luggage didn't show until about 1PM the next day. Thankfully, the bus didn't leave for Seward until 4, with sailing at 10PM, so it worked out in the end.

Then, on the return, we docked a Vancouver for the 4hour bus ride to Seattle. We were delayed 2hr at the border (pre 9-11) and missed our flight in Seattle by 20 min. The next connection they could make didn't leave until 7PM, so we had a nice day checking out Seattle. But, we flew all night over what has to be the darkest part of the US that God invented.

I guess, alls well that ends well. Even if the schedule looks good on paper it can be upset by a loose screw somewhere. Moral: If you fly in, go the day before. And, don't plan to work the day after you get back either. Just won't happen.

If you book with the online agency that begins with O you can get cell phone messages about delayed, or canceled flights :D

We buy a small amount of internet time so we can keep in touch at home without killing our cell phone bills from out of country calls, on the night before our flight we can just sign on and do the boarding passes online, that makes it easier at the airport and might clue you in on changes or plans. But I gotta say I do like that cell phone notification!!! :)

Actually, I believe just about every airline out there has flight notifications now... Many will leave a voicemail, many email... which works out great if you have a pocket pc or crackberry...
