The 4 means you have an inside room (no window or porthole to see out of) and the D means you are on the 4th deck that has inside staterooms. A is usually Rivera, B is usually Main, etc. The higher the letter, the higher the deck. The rooms will be the same, but the deck of the ship is different.

 

Go to the deck plan of the ship you are booked with and look at which deck 4D is on compared to the other catagories. That is what I do and it helps me see where everything is and how close my room will be to things (elevators, casino, dining room, etc.)
