mrdood Posted August 3, 2006 #2 Share Posted August 3, 2006 What does a cruise line do when they retire a boat...sell, break it, or what All of the above, depending upon the boat... for general cruising questions like this that are not carnival specific, there is a forum called the Floataway Lounge, perfect place for this type of inquiry. ...and for the super curious there is a forum called "Whatever happened to..." or something like that where you can read about former cruise ships. Curt Jerome Wild Posted August 3, 2006 #4 Share Posted August 3, 2006 Yes, the "Whatever Happened to" forum has a lot of great interesting threads and stories of what happens to cruise ships after they are retired, bought or sold to other cruiselines or companies. Essentially, they'll get sold to other lines and companies for a while, and then when they get too old and rusty, then they turned into razor blades! :( ;) CJW PS So any time you shave, you could be using an old cruise ship!
PvtHoovie Posted August 6, 2006 #5 Share Posted August 6, 2006 Yes, I wouldn't mind checking out the "cruise ships for sail" listings after I hit tonite's Powerball...

dougnewmanatsea Posted August 6, 2006 #8 Share Posted August 6, 2006 Looks like this thread got moved over here from the Carnival forum. All of the above answers are correct. Carnival ships, when they're sold, usually aren't that old, so they go on to another operator and eventually when they get too old to be useful any more, they go to the breakers in India or Bangladesh and get broken up. The oldest former Carnival ship still around is the former CARNIVALE. She was Carnival's second ship, bought when Carnival themselves were a small operator buying other lines' second-hand ships. She is 50 years old this year and still going strong as THE TOPAZ. I visited her in New York this past May and you can view an illustrated photo tour of the ship here. Keep in mind, this ship was part of the Carnival fleet as recently as 13 years ago!
