Driving to the port of new York

Hello all,

We are very experienced cruisers (14 to date) and we usually drive to almost all of our embarkation ports. Next March Break we will be sailing on the Norwegian Spirit out of New York. We are Canadians driving from the Toronto area and we don't know New York at all. Can anyone give me any information on what Saturday/Sunday driving is like in New York? What are the parking facilities like....are they nearby? Any details would be appreciated!

Traffic is certainly better on the weekends than during the week. It's worse than Toronto. Cabs are everywhere and people drive like maniacs.

Follow the Hudson river south when you see a big ship turn right :D

Some directions on the above link. The pier is relatively easy to get to. Two turns after you cross the George Washington Bridge. Parking is on top of the pier. Up the ramp, drop the bags, up a second ramp to parking, escalator down to check in. Everything is well marked.

If you can manage to get to the West Side Highway, you're just about there. Signs are clear; drop off is on second level with parking right above on the third level.

 

One caution: check to see how many ships are going out of the West Side Terminal that day. If three are leaving the same day, traffic can get pretty bad. Otherwise, weekend traffic in Manhattan is a breeze.

Because of where the pier is located (you won't have to drive through the streets of N.Y.C.) you should only see marginal trafic, and once you park you are basicly there, no long walks just an elevator ride. I sailed out of there on several occassions and never had any trouble at all.
