winowoman Posted August 27, 2006 #1 Share Posted August 27, 2006 We are leaving for our 12 day Med Cruise, and are bringing some wonderful Napa Valley wine from home. (yes it will have to sit in with the luggage,) but we have the proper containers and the airlines said it was ok. Just a couple questions, Will the wine travel ok in styrofoam containers and will there be a problem getting it thru customs once we are in Rome? Just wonder if it's worth the hassle. It does count as piece of baggage:( And I know that I can buy some wine there. Thanks for the help
chfs_home Posted August 28, 2006 #2 Share Posted August 28, 2006 The styrofoam case will work fine, we just took a full case to Alaska. Check with Italy's customs laws to determine the amount of duty free alcohol you are allowed to bring in. It is usually 2-3 bottles in many countries. Personally, I might bring one very special bottle with me, but I would buy a case of wine when I got there. Italy is especially famous for its wines and I would not deal with the hassle of carrying a case of wines to Italy when I can buy some excellent wines there that I may never have the chance to try in the States. Check out winespectator.com to find info on Italian wines and locate good wine shops in Rome. Cheers!
OhioDogLover Posted August 28, 2006 #3 Share Posted August 28, 2006 I agree. I would absolutely buy some wine in Italy. They have many tremendous wines and they don't count against your baggage allowance, won't break in the luggage compartment, and won't get "lost". Not to take anything away from the wonderful stuff you can get in Napa Valley.:D
sandancer Posted August 29, 2006 #4 Share Posted August 29, 2006 Buy some Barolo - its wonderful. It is truly not worth the hassle of carrying wine long distance when you are going to visit a country where good wine is freely available.
