Just wondering what would be a good time to take a cruise out of NYC or NJ to avoid the hurricane season. Also, which cruise lines are good for someone who is taking a 2 year old and a 5 year old? Is it OK to take kids that young on a cruise? Anything else that you cn would be appreciated. Thanks.

As mentioned, hurricane season officially begins June 1 and ends Nov 30 each year. Practically speaking however, it is incredibly rare (2005 season notwithstanding) that a hurricane would appear anywhere in the Caribbean before the end of June or after October 31. The best cruiselines for families is kind of, well, subject to opinion. Carnival comes to mind, lots of action, plenty to do, well trained and dedicated Camp Carnival staff. Royal Caribbean and Princess would also be very good. HAL's newer Vista Class ships are very family oriented and feature great Club HAL staffs as well.

IMHO a ship that you should check into is the Explorer of the Seas. At this time she sails part of the year in Miami and New York but will be moving to year round service next year out of Bayonne New Jersey. This ship has everything you could imagine and more. Your kids will love Adventure Ocean. August through October are usually the worst months for hurricanes.

NCL would be a great choice and on many of their sailings the 3rd and 4th passenger in the cabin sail for free and just pay the port taxes. NCL's kids crew starts at age 2. The kids crew on the DAWN out of NY is fantastic. NCL also offers freestyle dining, so you aren't on a set dinner time, you can dine at a table for just your family or request to be seated with other guests, and the dress code is a bit more relaxed.

:) I love the Disney Cruise line and so do my kids....we have been on many different lines and as for the kids this is the best. We will be taking our 6th DC in Dec. 2006 for Christmas. Check out the boards for Disney...we started taking outr kids on cruises when they were that age and they are know 12 and 9...almost 13 and 10. We try to cruise every year .
