lauderdalebob Posted September 13, 2006 #1 Share Posted September 13, 2006 Have cruised often before, but 1st time for transatlantic from Southampton to Ft. Lauderdale in March. Question is - being in a hull cabin would we get more sun being on the port (left) or starboard (right) side of the ship or would it really make no difference since the ship will be sailing in a diagonal line across the ocean I assume giving starboard side sun in the a.m. and port side sun in the p.m. with the sun setting in the west. Yes, I know this sounds crazy but I just can't decide which side to go with. If anyone has sailed this route, can you "shed some light" on this? Thanks. pb82 Posted September 13, 2006 #2 Share Posted September 13, 2006 I've never sailed that route either, but it seems that there's nothing wrong with your sense of direction. Make your choice on whether you are a dawn devotee or a sunset freak. In either case, keep a sharp eye out for the green flash. Paul
mlleach Posted September 13, 2006 #3 Share Posted September 13, 2006 What green flash?
FuranzuMaru Posted September 13, 2006 #4 Share Posted September 13, 2006 The 'Green Flash' occurs (not always) when the last part of the sun drops below the horizon at sunset. Not sure about anything happening at sunrise as I am not usually awake then. With regards to the transatlantic sun this link may help you to decide :) http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/port%20out%20starboard%20home.html
pb82 Posted September 13, 2006 #5 Share Posted September 13, 2006 If conditions are just right the first brief sliver of light at sunrise, or the last at sunset, can be green. Karie (travel-to-go) has seen it and provided these great links about the phenomenom: http://mintaka.sdsu.edu/GF/pictures.html http://www.isc.tamu.edu/~astro/research/sandiego.html Haven't seen it yet myself, but I'm always hoping. Boulder Girl Posted September 13, 2006 #6 Share Posted September 13, 2006 We've just returned from 9/6 eastbound crossing:D. It was fantastic! We were in a starboard (south facing for east bound) in hull cabin. It was very sunny. We also enjoyed the moon views. When walking around deck 7, it seemed that there was a sunny southern side and shady northern side.
